Hello Baris 😊

No need to bargain with the taxi driver. Just ask him to turn on the meter. If he does not turn on the meter he will charge you what is know as a fixed rate with will be more than what the meter will tot up.

Also, dont take the taxis inside the airport terminal. Those are more expensive.

The taxi cost from the International airport to the Khao San Road will be less than 500 Baht.

You could also take the tourist bus, which is very easy to do. It is just outside the terminal. They speak English and will let you out at the Khao San. The cost from the International airport to the Khao San Road is around 150 Bahts.

How long does it take to get to the Khao San Road? : I never timed it, but it is quite long. Over an hour at least.

my favourite island sofar has been Ko Tao - but everyone has their favourites for different reasons. Was easy to book and get to from Khao San - book a Lomprayah air con coach and joint catermeran ticket (aprox 800bht) via Chuphorn, leaves 9pm every evening and will get you Ko Tao for around 10am following day. most of the TAT offices will be able to sell you these or ask someone where Lomprayah office is (on road which runs parallell to Khao San).

Sairee Beach on Ko Tao is the main strip, you can get taxi (4wheel drive pick up truck) for 50bht to Sairee Beach but will have to wait til about 6 people gather (quickly done when getting off a tourist boat!) get them to drop you at Sairee Cottages which is central along the beach and you can then get your bearings and walk to any of the resorts easily from there. We stayed at Sairee Cottages, right on beach really really friendly staff, clean and has a great resteraunt and right on the beach! 400bht/night for basic room with dbl bed and en-suite. we did our open water and advanced diving course with them too and so got free accomodation included for 6 nights. highly reccomend diving there - breath taking!! even if you don't dive though its a really amazing island, hire Quad bikes and go expoloring, so many gorgeous beaches and summits that you can view the island from. nice and chilled atmosphere too, nice and quiet and laid back during day but you can find parties on the beach at night too if thats your thing (Lotus Bar on Sairee Beach always had a big crowd and fire twirlers etc)...

try to make it over to Ko Phanagn too - but go north where its quieter and more beautiful.

if you want totally remote and chilled the i highly reccomend Tonsai over on west coast - absolutely stunning place. great for rock climbing and the atmosphere there is really laid back and uncommercial.

so jealous... am headed up north now but thoroughly enjoyed my time down south - have fun!! L x

Hi

You are arriving at 3am? The tourist bus won't be running then. However, the plus side is that the roads will be emptier, so it should take you less time to get to Khao San - you should be able to do it in about an hour.

You will have to pay the expressway toll on top of the meter. So don't be surprised if the taxi driver asks you for 50 baht en route.

If you are arriving at that time, you want to have a guesthouse booked. Otherwise a lot will be closed when you arrive. If you book somewhere in advance you could ask them to arrange an airport pick up for you.

How far from Bangkok do you want to be when you go to an island? Ko Chang is lovely. It has trekking and beaches and good nightlife. Also some nice smaller islands around for a more chilled out experience.

Check out where the monsoon is in August. The rainy season in Thailand switches sides around that time. I can't remember exactly when though.

If you are going to Thailand before November I would suggest Phukett as the island to go to. It is the rainy season, and getting on to Phukett is more reliable than getting on the other islands during the rainy season. Sometimes the boats dont go, if the sea is too rough as it sometimes is during the rainy season. No boat is needed for Phukett because it is joined to the mainland via a road. Reply to this

thanks cate. what time do the tourist bus start running?
actually, ı was planning to wander the guesthouses and choose one of them comparing their price and comfort. but if they will be closed in the morning then ı think it wont be possible.😞 then, ı have another question, which guesthouse would u advice?😊
also, ı googled some guesthouses but none of them had a airport pick-up service. do u know which one has this service?
well, ı will be in bangkok on 31 july and leave 9 august. so ı dont want to spend more than 10 hours to turn back to bangkok.

thank u kate and mell, u reminded me the season is rainy. can't ı find out whether boat is available for the Ko Phagan, Ko Thao or Ko Chang while ı am in Bangkok?

well, ı guess ı am behaving as lazy man but the information u give me comes more reliable than ı read on the other websites.

Villa Cha Cha will arrange an airport pick up and comes highly reccomended - a wee bit more pricey than those on Khao san (on street that runs parrallel) at 800bht for a twin but super nice and comfy and really gorgeous boutique decor, nice pool etc. stayed there last week and they have 24hr reception and bar and a very friendly doorman called Lek who will go out of his way to help you out.

Yes, you can find out which island is best when you get to Bangkok. The travel agents will be able to recommend places and you will be able to check out what the weather is like.

I was on Ko Samui in August a couple of years ago and it was overcast but ok. The Ko Chang boat is only 20 minutes so might be less likely to be cancelled due to the weather.

You can also consider flying to some of the islands which removes the boat problem.

Sorry, I don't know when the tourist buses start running. Try the airport website. Guesthouses might not have an airport pickup service but they might be able to arrange a taxi for you.

5am will be too early to look at guesthouses as many will just have night staff on. They won't know what rooms are available until around midday when people checkout. So you won't get as much choice at before then.

Where are you flying from? If it is a long flight, then walking around gueshouses looking for a decent room will be the last thing that you want to do when you arrive. Not to mention that if this is your first time in Asia it will be really overwhelming and everyone will be preying on you. I would definatly suggest booking at least your first night before you arrive. After that you can check out other places for comfort etc. once you are clear about where you are/what is going on.

Yeah, you could ask people on the travel sites if anyone has just gone to those islands before you set out. Otherwise you could just remain flexible and go to the pier towns hoping for the best. If there are no boats going, you could just go someplace else. For example, Khao Sok is not far from Surat Thani (where you take the boat to Khao Pha Ngan) and that is well worth a visit if the boats to Khao Pha Ngan are not going.

ı will follow your advice and book a guest house for the first night..

There are always guesthouses available on the Khao San Road. I never pre book. Pre booking means paying more. But if you want to pre - book you could use KhaoSanRoad.com

One of my favourite things to do in Bangkok is to ride up and down the river on the passanger boat. Also, I really like the restaurant at Jim Thompsons house. The Chatuchak weekend market is a great place to buy all kinds of things and to just hang out.

I suppose 'fool moon party' could sometimes be an accurate description, considering what some get up to at them. :D Reply to this
