Dr Amy Amy Myers Post Count: 1 Msg: #1 147 days ago, July 2nd 2009 | Hi I am planning a trip to Cambodia/Laos and Thailand Aug 16 - Sept 5 | I have about 17 days Unsure if travelling alone or with partner few questions: I have heard Angkor Watt is the place to go in Cambodia - would you go to Phnom Penh if pressed for time? Also Luang Prabang is the highlight of Laos - would you go to Vientiane? and if so bus or fly? With the extra time I was to spend a few days in Bangkok and possibly go to one of the beaches - I know Phuket is most popular - recs? It's rainy season - does that mean that going to the beach is a bad idea? too hot? too rainy?? thanks, amy Rat on the Road Kris and Kate Post Count: 424 Msg: #2 147 days ago, July 2nd 2009 | Hi Amy | There are so many places to see in each other those countries! You could spend way more than 17 days exploring Thailand, or 17 exploring Thailand and either Laos or Cambodia - suggest Bangkok, North Thailand (Chiang Mai - trekking in the hills, maybe ride an elephant), fly to Luang Prabang, travel through Laos via Vang Vienh to Vietiene, and the over the border and overnight train back to Bangkok. Or Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, back to Bangkok, South to the beach. Phuket is very touristy. Krabi is lovely, as is Ko Samui. Doing all three seems like you are only seeing through the keyhole of each country, with a lot time/money spent travelling to reward you. The rainy season in Thailand changes depending on what coast you are on. Even when it is rainy season, it usually means an hour of very very heavy rain in the afternoon. It rarely rains all day (although it does sometimes obviously). There is some rain, but not every day and usually only for a few hours when it does happen. Also, most of the rain conveniently falls at night. There are lots of hot, sunny hours to enjoy the beach during the day. Phukett is a good choice of island to go to during the rainy season because you dont need to take a boat to get on it. Sometimes the boats dont go if the seas are too rough, which they sometimes are during the rainy season. On thing to note about Phukett during the rainy season is that a lot of drownings happen at that time of the year, so be careful where you swim. I totally agree with our fried kris when he said: Doing all three seems like you are only seeing through the keyhole of each country, with a lot time/money spent travelling to reward you.![]() But if you still wanna do the 3 countries, i think you should better use a plane to travel from a destination to another. My recommendation will be as follows: Cambodia: • Siem Reap: Dont waste your times by taking a bus from Bangkok, the travel agents there might lie at you and tell you it's only 5 hours to Siem Reap, DONT BELIEVE THAT !! Just Fly to Sieam Reap (Even if you have enough time i will not suggest you to travel by bus as it's very bad bumpy road). You can get the 3 days pass for Angkor Wat, and do as much as you can to see the important main tamples there, you can check the float village as well. • Phon Phen: If iam not mistaken it's 3 - 4 hours from Siem Reap. Two days will gonna be enough here. Make sure you visit the Skulls Filed, and the S21 prison. Try to find a guest house in the Lake side as it's a lovely place. Laos: • Luang Perbang: a lovely relaxed town, 3days will gonna be enough here. Make sure you visit the waterfalls there; Tad Sae Waterfall, and Kouangsi Waterfall, and check the Night market. • Vang Veing: Take a bus from LP , I cant remmber how many hours, maybe 7 !! Not sure. Make sure you go for Kayaking or Tubing in the Mekong River. Avoid Happy Shakes and Pizza's for your health, hehe. Thailand: • South of Thai: Now you got around 7days left; I would suggest to aviod Phuket and go for the small islands around phuket. Maybe you can do a day tour to Phuket. My self i have visited Colanta Island, Koh Moh (lovely island, go for the emeraled cave), and Phi Phi (lovely too). **Maybe you can do Laos first >> Fly out of Ventinet to siem Reap >> Phnoem phen to BKK >> South of Thai. Hope this will help you to arrange your trip good luck hkyeti patrick yeung Post Count: 11 Msg: #5 134 days ago, July 15th 2009 | hi there, | Siem Reap to Phon Phen will take you 8 hours or more. Ko Phi Phi is packed with tourist, especially day tours from Krabi and Phuket, but the surrounding islands are very good. Cheers! Looks like Thailand is definitely on the list, so opt for 10 days there. I'd say do Cambodia, as travel is a bit faster than in Laos. Spend 3 full days at Angkor Wat seeing the temples, then bus it down to Phnom Penh. (it is 5-6 hours by bus, not 8 hours, by the way!) Spend 2 full days there seeing sights & absorbing the atmosphere. You will need an extra day in transit to get to Thailand. Number of Users: 6 | Number of Posts: 6 | |||||||||||||||
