Japan has been one of my dream places, and I suddenly happen to get a chance to go to japan for about a week.

The problem is, however, that I know almost nothing about the country, and do not have any idea how to travel japan.

Having no experience of traveling somewhere without a travel agency, I\'m a bit afraid of this sudden journey.

I have only three days from my flight... what should I do? How should I plan my trip? Where should I go?

Hi John,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

What aspects of Japan interest you/why has it been one of your dream places?

Travel in the main cities is pretty easy. Does the one week here include travel days?

Thanks Jo.

The one week does not include travel days.

The country is somewhat special to me because my grand parents lived there for a brief period.. and I've heard a lot about the country from them.

Since I only have a week, I've decided to spend the whole time in Tokyo, traveling with public transportations.

You'll have no problem using public transport - it's very efficient. Probably the most useful line is the circular Yamanote line.

There's a few options for day passes, depending on whether you want to also use subways etc.

Things to do from Tokyo;
Overnight climb of Mt Fuji - get the bus from Shinjuku
Nikko - full day or overnight
Narita san - temple complex
Senso-ji - temple in Asakusa
Imperial Palace

but there's heaps more :-)

I am directionally challenged, I'm that person that always has the GPS on in my car because otherwise I won't make it anywhere. However, I went to Tokyo for a month about a year ago and I had the entire subway system down in 2 days. All the lines are color coded, and the stations are numbered from left to right. Also, the station themselves are numbered accordingly from the inside! Amazing. And to make it all even better, the trains are ALWAYS on time. I was there for a month, and if a train was 2 minutes late people would stand around and complain.

Make sure you get a subway card the first day, which they have little kiosks next to the entrances to the station. Be prepared for all of the people though, there's twice as many people below the ground as above! Keep in mind the trains are not 24/7, they close at 11pm and open up again (I think 5 am) in the morning.
