I'm thinking of adding Goa onto my RTW itinerary. I've always wanted to go, but I don't know a huge amount about it. Could anyone recommend Goa (or the opposite) and any specific parts of Goa?
Plus, I'd appreciate any Goa info/facts/tips/opinions anyone could share.
Cheers, Chris.
Reply to this Goa is a great Destination. Its definitely recommended.Goa is a small state so Nothing specific about it. See entire goa if u Have time. Its Tropical, its forested, its got great beaches , Great food and is very Laid Back and yes Budget travelers shudnt have problem coz Its has both Expensive and Inexpensive options. Just Like any other part of India...
U can reach there by Plane, train or bus .U can rent Bikes cheaply to travel around the state and U get cheap accomodation. I wud Say Must see.
Reply to this Hello Chris 😊
Although I have been to India 3 times, I have never been to Goa. From what I have heard about it, it seems it would be a good place to rest for a couple of weeks for people travelling in India long term.

Reply to this At least two weeks easy in Goa. Forget the outside world. It's the type of chilled-out place that you just don't want to leave.

I was thinking of bolting it onto the beginning of my trip (for a couple of weeks) - then from there onto China, SE Asia, OZ etc.
Also, makes my RTW trip feel more, well, RTW! 😉

Another few questions:
1 - Can anyone recommend any particular areas in Goa? Backpacker areas please.
2 - Am I right in thinking the easiest route is via Mumbia?
3 - Also any links to good Goa websites (things to do see/backpacker specific sites) would be great - probably need to PM me to avoid the snippers 😊
Cheers all.
Reply to this 1} I wud recommend make calangute ur base station and then rent a bike to go around.. Backpacker specific ? GOA .. The Whole of GOA is for Backpackers dude. Although for accomadation Calangute is cheap. And yeah bharatrentals.com is a place u can find accomadation. Its a good site thru which I found cheap accomadation in Goa{calangute}.
2} Yeah Bombay is Easy route. Also Bangalore . U get train bus and planes from these two cities. But yeah Bombay is Easiest I wud Say.
3} Just Google it. I wud say the first few search results are reliable..
Reply to this 2 - Am I right in thinking the easiest route is via Mumbia?
Yeah, I think that is the closest and least expensive airport to fly into. Then you can take a plane from the domestic airport to Goa. Or else you can take a night train or a night bus.
3 - Also any links to good Goa websites
I dont know any specific sites, but there are plenty of blogs about Goa, here on TravelBlog.
Goa Reply to this No Mell not night train or Night Bus . The Scenery from Bombay is too good to miss out.Its coast Hugging on oneside and tropical forests on the other..
Reply to this Hi Chris, Goa is definitely recommend on a trip to India, its an extremely laid back place where all you want to do is lie on the beach and soak in the sun while sipping on beer.
However, if you are planning on taking a trip to Goa during the monsoons in India, I would not recommend it. Its wet and drizzling all the time, most shacks close and the beach is not safe for swimming.
There are some ideal backpackers paradise in Goa, namely, Palolem and Arambol. These are quiet and peaceful and acco & food/booze here is very cheap too.
Other places such a Baga/Calangute/Candolim/Anjuna are very nice too however a lot more commercial, quite crowded during season and far more a 'touristy' place.

The more I read the more I like the idea. It will probably be the first stop on our trip, which will be in early October. This is right at the start of the season so hopefully the worst of the monsoon should be over. My only concern is the impact on possible RTW ticket prices, but this is something I can look into closer to the time.
Reply to this Yes, October is a good time to be in Goa...have fun...do write blogs on your RTW travel!
