Any suggestions on train travel from Bangkok to Tibet ?
14 years ago, May 18th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #73067
I am flying in to Thailand July 13 and staying in Asia for a month and a half . my only real goal is to make it to Tibet on train, but i would also like to go the other direction towards Indonesia. I would like to take trains as much as i can but also realize i am limited on time. and also very important im limited on cash

so here is my plan: im going to take trains from Bangkok to Tibet through Vietnam and central china. when i come back however i want to back track as little as possible. i have heard there are cheap flights out of southern china, so i figure ill train trip it back there and fly back into Bangkok. from Bangkok i will train travel agian on train down through southern Thailand and Malaysia. and finaly fly out of singapore just in time to catch my return flight out of Bangkok.

does this sound possible?

What is the visa situation for Cambodia, Laos , Vietnam, Thialand, Malayshia, Singapore and China?

what are some cheap places to stay along the way?

does anybody know about cheap flights in asia?

any sugestions on any of this or anything else would be great

thanks

Marc

For info on train travel in Asia, check out the Man in seat 61. It's all covered, including what you need to know about crossing from China into Tibet.

As you say, it doesn't sound long to do these two trips in. The timetables on the above website will tell you if it's physically possible. I'm assuming the purpose of the trip is to travel and not to sightsee.

You need visas for Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. You can get the Thai, Cambodian and Laos visas on arrival. You have to get the Vietnamese and Chinese visas in advance. You can get them from a neighbouring country like Thailand if you have time. They can take a couple of days to process.

Cheap flights in Asia can be got from Air Asia, Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia to name three. Reply to this

Are you flying or going by train? One route would be Bangkok to Kunming by plane, then going to Shangri-La by bus/train (really a very nice trip). From there you can take a plane to Lhasa. Some people do it by road, but it is very long and tough trip, and you need special permits etc. You need to book well in advance because there are few planes Shangri-La to Lhasa. Other suggestion is to fly to Chengdu and then go by train (about 48 horus) or plane to Lhasa. Or overland from Katmandu. In any case you need to use a travel agency, there are many of them from basic to very expensive (search by google will give you a number to check out). It is an expensive trip, unfortunately.
