Wondering whether to take camping stuff on a long trip to asia...

Hey guys

We're travelling through asia (Russia, Mongolia, China, pakistan, india, nepal, SE countries) and are wondering if it's worthwhile taking a tent, sleeping bags etc. As far as I can see it's a bit like this:

Pros:

*Save money (the more we save the longer we can stay) on accomodation.
*Ability to stop anywhere for the night (Are there likely to be hassles doing this?)

Cons:

*Having to lug all the extra stuff around for 6 months+, even when in cities etc
*Temperature diff (we'll be Mongolia, China etc over winter, Vietnam, Thailand etc in the summer! - what sleeping bags to take??)

So... Yes or No??? Any opinions welcome!

Are there places to camp in these countries?

Cos in SE Asia, most accommodation is so cheap anyway I wouldn't have thought it was worth paying to camp. In some National Parks and beach resorts you can hire a tent if there are camping facilities.

Plus, double what BnK says, in SE Asia, useful, perhaps. Comfortable in a tent in 40 degree heat? No. Reply to this

I had the same thought before my last trip, covering a lot of the places you listed - and I ended up being pleased that I didn't have to lug a tent around with me. My reasoning was that if I was to be remote enough to use a tent, then I'd need a sleeping bag and stove, water and food which was all extra stuff to carry around with me, especially if I was going to need cold weather clothes. Mongolia can drop to -30C in some places during the winter, BTW.

The only place I was grateful for a tent was 6 weeks in the Outback in Australia - but I had a car to carry supplies.

I agree with Rat on the Road - it'll be very hot in SE Asia and you can always hire a tent if you want to camp. Reply to this

We were going to take one with us but have decided against it as its so cheap in asia and VERY hot in a tent!! it would just be a pain to carry, the same goes for a sleeping bag. You can probably pick one up half the price there anyway if you needed one.
