I'm going to NZ and looking for suggestions for my itinery

Hello, I am currently on a round the world trip and will be leaving Australia for New Zealand at the beginning of May. I'm looking for suggestions of places and sights to add to my itinery. I will be starting off in Christchurch where I will be staying with my cousin for two weeks, I can do day trips and stuff from there but then I am planning to have another 2 weeks in the South Island and then head upto the North Island for another two weeks. I'm also wondering how people move around on buses there? I've done the Greyhound in Oz and am looking for something similar to that, as I am currently travelling it is hard for me to research things like I would at home so hopefully some of you other friendly travellers can help me out!! Thanks :-)

Here's some transport options for you;

Intercity Buses

Kiwi Experience

Bottom Bus - lower South Island (have used them, good experience)

Interislander ferry - goes from Picton to Wellington.
