Hello Jason

Here are a couple of threads which may give you some ideas. There are also a lot of blogs about the various countries if you need some inspiration about which ones to choose.

Where to start in South America

close to santiago and buenos aires you have, chile: san pedro, bolivia: Uyuni, peru: titicaca, cuzco & machu picchu.. also torres del paine in chilean patagonia and iguazu in argentina. those would be the highlights in my view.

one idea may be to head straight form santiago to peru, then work your way back down.

ie. fly to arica "sky airlines", then bus it to nazca, ica, lima. then fly "star peru" to cuzco (or bus to cuzco via arequipa). then bus to titicaca, la paz, uyuni, san pedro, santiago, then fly to punta arenas, and bus to puerto natales (torres del paine) and bus back up through argentina via, bariloche mendoza and on to buenos aires. another option would be to go and see what you like in argentinian patagonia then fly back to santiago and bus straight across to buenos aires possible stopping in mendoza / cordoba. oh and iguazu is "only :-)" 18 hours bus from buenos aires. look for bus cama or full cama in argentina. but remember the best ones get booked out early. but all are pretty damn good.

hostels in general are around 10 dollars per night give or take.
bolivia is cheap( ie. best restaurant in la paz "casa argentina = 5 dollars). food in peru can be as cheap as 1 or 2 dollars per meal if you look for the local "set menu" style restaurants with no frills. if you go touristy , exect to spend up to 10 dollars per meal. chile can be cheap as 3 or 4 dollars per meal too but you need to scout around a little. be warned that argentinian patagonia is a little expensive and extremely touristy, it may be smarter to cook your own meals there and even camping out, if your the hardcore type. the buses in particular are dearer than normal on the main route form patagonia up to bariloche.

take care.
matt
