I'd like to add another place, but am having a REALLY hard time deciding between Heidelberg, which would be out of our way, but everything says it's the quintessential Germany or Fussen, which is on the way from Munich to Venice and I from the sounds of things would be beautiful with the Alps there and castles. Someone who's been there, please help me out!! | greek gal Inga Siden Post Count: 50 Msg: #2 218 days ago, April 18th 2009 | I have been to Heidelberg but not to Fussen though to other places in the Alps. Heidelberg is indeed pretty with the historical centre and the romantic castle ruin overlooking the town. But the Alps are spectacular so I would go for Fussen, having the choice. Heidelberg is not that different from Bavaria so I don't think it will be worth the detour. | Zigeuner Doug L. IMHO the Heidelberg region is more of a tourist trap for Americans created as a result of the many US military bases that were once in the area. Other than a decripit old castle on the top of a hill and a beautiful bridge across the Neckar, there isn't much to see in Heidelberg. Lots of bars and shops. I'm not sure Germans feel any particular affinity for Heidelberg. Fuessen and the Alps feature a much more pristeen beauty. Germans are huge nature lovers and Bavaria is a very popular tourist area for them. Besides the Royal Castles in nearby Schwangau, Fuessen is also on the Austrian border. A number of popular ski resorts are in the area. Downtown Fuessen seems much more interesting than Heidelberg to me. I am sure this wont be your last trip, so you could go to Heidelberg some other time. Someone who's been there,...![]() I lived in Heidleberg for 6 months one year. Yes, it is a beautiful town and worth visiting. Mel Olicat Amy Hand Post Count: 17 Msg: #5 215 days ago, April 20th 2009 | Fussen it is! I was hoping that would be the majority vote because it is conveniently on our route. Thank you guys so much! | globespotter TravelNEurope Post Count: 1 Msg: #6 210 days ago, April 25th 2009 | Hi there, | I live 10 minutes from Heidelberg. Go to Heidelberg and you will not be disappointed. Lots to do, many restaurants, bars if you like that sort of thing, very international due to the universita, and its rather central. You can take a day trip by train to some other nice cities in the area. Have fun, Globespotter Number of Users: 5 | Number of Posts: 6 | ||||||||||||||
