Hello everyone !!!! well i am glad i found this blog - long story short - I am doing my master thesis about place marketing - HK is one of the cities I will be writing about - so I would like if any of you could give me some feed back, what you love about it - what you don't. And just a general option about the city - this will be used as part of the research being conducted for the thesis, and your opinions are greatly valued!!

thank you!!!!

Karolina

Hey! Towers everywhere which can be a bit oppressive after a while. The city is clean and it is fairly easy to find your way round thanks to all signs being translated into English. The transport system is very efficient, the tube is spotless and easy to use. They even have a 2598ft long string of escalators for getting around several steep districts. The escalator runs uphill in the afternoon and downhill during the morning rush hour.
Every night, at 8pm, there is a light show in Central district, all towers have lights flashing. It is unbelievable to see the effort made to attract tourists to the city. Hong Kong is far away from home (Scotland) but somehow, I didn't feel that far away. I felt comfortable the whole time I was there. I expected to experience a culture shock but it didn't happen. You can really feel that the Bristish have put their stamp on the city. The British order is there, everywhere. We even have been told that people from Hong Kong don't like people from mainland China and vice and versa (this has been verified on a couple of occasions, however it is bad to generalise). I think that going to mainland China would be a very different experience. It was a bit the downside of the whole week I spent there as I like travels to shake me and to destabilize me and Hong Kong didn't. Went to Vietnam afterwards and that was something!!!!People in Hong Kong were quite friendly overall. The food was good and cheap.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that people are quite considerate of each other. When they are sick, they wear a surgical mask in order not to contaminate others. I was quite impressed about that! I have seen few people on the tube with a cold coughing with no surgical mask and they seemed quite embarrassed and had an tissue in front of their mouth and nose. Infection prevention seems quite important (understandable considering the high population). There were signs giving guidance on how to avoid the proliferation of vermin and also how to avoid getting Japanese encephalitis (which we weren't vaccinated for, a bit scary). There are also signs in the tube saying for instance "be nice, be happy". You don't see people littering the streets and cigarets butts are put out and put in the bin. Again, very considerate towards garbage people who clean their city. We ended up feeling quite conscious of the fact that ones behaviour can have a negative impact on others. That was weird and a good thing at the same time.

What stood out for me is how really packed and busy it was, yet felt really safe.
Agreed - Britain was definitely here.

Yes it's a good point, Hong Kong is very safe. That was unbelievable. Late at night, you can walk everywhere without being bothered by anyone which would not happen in Edinburgh. Hong Kong is full of bridges and in the UK (and Europe and I am sure in lots of other places in the world), dark corners are often a place for drug dealers or homeless people but in Hong Kong no one hangs out suspiciously. It was odd for us to let off our guard like that. Quite nice actually!

Hello Bean76, and getinvolved - great to be getting feedback! really appreciate it!
Just wondering, was HK different from what you had expected? what did you imagine it to be, and is there anything that you were right or wrong about (other than what you stated above). What's I am looking for is if you're had some preconceived notions about HK, and if so what were they?
also - how long were you there?
