I am a student at the University of Derby, Uk, and for my dissertation I want to discuss my research topic in this online forum. It's about the imagery of sex and romance in tourism advertising. Would be great if some of you could help me!!
Hello, I am studying Travel and Tourism Management at the University of Derby, UK, and at the moment I am writing on my dissertation. My research topic is the evaluation of sex and romance in tourism advertising. This discussion should just reflect your opinions, you don't need to know something. But it would really help me, if you write about your ideas, beliefs....
My question is: Do you think that sexual or romantic imagery in tourism advertising influence the (your) choice of a holiday type or destination?
Thank you in advance!!!!

Reply to this Hello Sonja 😊
I moved this to the General Forum.
I am trying to figure out what to answer about your question. At the moment, I think that sexual or romantic imagery in tourism would not effect my decision to go some place. Um!!, but on second thoughts, it may give me the impression that a tourist resort is being advertised and then I would lose interest in the destination. I prefer independent travel to glossy organised tourist restorts.

I think that I am not really influenced by sex in advertising...it more annoys me, because it is too much and everywhere. Not just in tourism advertising. But I think that some of my friends - the male ones ;-) - are maybe influenced. Because they just go on holidays for drinking and flirting and so on. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your dissertation.

Reply to this I may be with the others on this one: sexual imagery in tourism is a turn off! I would agree with xenia, that perhaps some males would be drawn to this imagery in picking destinations.
Thinking about it, romantic imagery may play a role if I'm thinking of places to go with my partner. We're usually too cheap to travel to the normal destinations advertised with romantic imagery, but places like Club Med do have beautiful, albeit, romantic brochures. And Club Med certainly puts their resorts in places we'd like to go to (Bora Bora anyone?). While we may not stay at a resort, we wouldn't mind swiming in those nice waters too. And I suppose we have picked accomodation in the past that looked "romantic", although we just termed it as nice or cute or comfortable.
I doubt it influences my decisions when traveling alone! Good luck!
Reply to this While I can't really decide if it effects me one way or the other I believe it does influence most people, maybe not the ones here who travel more than the average person, but for the average person yes. I live in the U.S. and here just about every kind of product uses sex to promote it. Sandals resorts is one place that I can think of that uses it. It entices people in relationships to get away from it all and just be together. Beaches all around the world and islands like caribbean are very popular also, is this because people go around half naked? Or because it's a place to have fun in the water? Or a combination of the two? You might also look at the places that are seen as the party destination like Cancun. Obviously this is good for their business, as many college students go there in thousands for spring break. But it probably misses out on a lot of family tourism because it's seen as a party place.
Reply to this I believe the Businesses who advertise Sex & Ramantic Images for promotion are loosing Image of their Business Instead. And today we are living in the world where this stragegy doesn't influence people much..
