How supersticious are you? Have you taken any precautions against the bad luck today?

I am not supersticous at all. But I did grow up amongst supersticious people in Ireland, who got anxious if the 13th of any month fell on a Friday. I cant remember if they took any precautions against the bad luck or gave in to the inevitable.

I think that is how superstition actually works. If you believe, you attract. :D Reply to this

That's what it was!!
I had a cr*p connection for a couple of hours(make that almost none), but it didn't even occur to me to blame Black Friday - hadn't noticed.

The weather had been a bit rough out there - I thought Ali had sent the storm up from KL ;-) Reply to this

Well, it must be almost midnight where you and Ali are, and then the bad luck should stop. 😉 Reply to this

Did you have bad luck on Feb 13th Jo? I dont know if I did or not. Didnt register with me at the time that it was the fatal combination of Friday and a 13th

My birthday is Feb 13 and this year, it fell on Friday the 13th... well, after work, me and my mates went on to a pub and got ourselves a little bit drunk, afterward, the girl that I like from work joined us and confessed her feelings for me... So I guess its not bad luck at all.. Reply to this

You are going to be the next Blogger of the Week, ZuZuZu72, so it is not all bad luck for you today.

As well as that, you now have enough recommends for your future blogs to go on the Front Page. So, here are the other requriements for blogs to get on the Front Page.
At least 400 words in the blog
At least 1 photo, that was uploaded within the 10 days prior to publishing the blog. 😊 Reply to this

I am not at all superstitious at all but I find this an interesting topic of discussion.
I checked wickipedia to see how this all got started. There will not be more than three in any given year and they always occur when the month starts on a Sunday-----Ok, that makes sense!

As you would imagine there are several theories from The Knight's of the Templar to something as simple as Friday's were considered unlucky days and the number 13 was considered and unlucky number.

But-- this brings up a great question. Do you believe in luck, fate, destiny? Do you believe in an internal locus of control or an external locus of control. An internal means that you believe that an event is contingent upon your own behavior. An external locus of control means that things happen as a result of luck, chance, fate or under the control of powerful others,

So-- do you feel "things happen to you" or do you think "you make things happen"?

This comes into play in the nursing profession in which I work. Understanding the point of view my patients are coming from allows me to understand how they may react to their treatment and diagnosis. Someone with an external locus of control may feel like this illness is "happening to them" and cannot do anything about it but someone with an internal locus will say, "if I start doing this and that I can alter the outcome".

For me superstitions fall under folk beliefs and many cultures around the world strongly believe in them and practice them. As travelers of the world , I feel we should become familiar with these beliefs before traveling to new lands. For example, some from the Mexican culture believe in Mal Ojo--- the evil eye. This occurs when an individual who is believed to possess a special power admires or covets the child of another and looks at but does not touch the child. Once given the evil eye, one can expect headaches, high fever, loss of sleep, weight loss and crying. The cure is to place a hen's egg mixed with water under the head of the child--- which supposedly drives the bad influence out of the child's body.

I'm fascinated by these types of tidbits.

Ok-- so I took off in two directions.
Love to know what you think about folk beliefs.......and share some that you are familiar with.

If I had known it was that special day I wouldn't have written my latest blog entry, or gone on the forums as it seems to becoming an addictive habit, perhaps I have caught the blogging bug which will be awful for everybody else! Reply to this

Bridget,

Many of us suffer from the blogging bug and have a mild forum addition. It makes you a better and wiser person so do not worry as you are in good company.

Thought it very interesting about the superstitions - here is another one given me by an older Norfolk friend many years ago - If you wash (clothes) on New Years Day you will wash someone out of the family! Needless to say I don't wash clothes on New Years Day! Was this a good idea someone had to give women the day off? Reply to this

Here are some more from my husband who worked at sea for many years - On Norwegian ships it is considered bad luck to bring a rucksack on board , also whistling at sea is considered bad luck, Perhaps replying to my forum entry is bad luck because I've got started now! Reply to this
