Are the Full Moon Parties on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand really that great? Or more of a letdown?
Hi I'm just tossing up whether to spend the coming New Year's Eve in Thailand at a Full Moon Party or somewhere else with lots of nightlife, perhaps Singapore or Malaysia etc. I would love to hear from anyone about any great experiences they have had in South East Asia on New Years Eve????? Thanks!!
Reply to this Hello Samantha 😊
I heard that full moon parties on Koh Phanagan are pretty good. Apparently DJs come from all over the world to play at them. They can however get very wild and dangerous and robberies are frequent. Also there is a shortage of accomodation on the island during them and the prices go up.
Will there be a full moon next New Years Eve?

Reply to this Definetly go for new years ever if you can!! You'll absolute love it.
Last time I travelled Asia, which were 4 years ago now - I went to a full moon party. Its unbelievable. The 2 days before is mad as well. As Mel said though, accomodation is tricky to get around the time though. I would recommend going a few days before so you can get some decent accomodation, otherwise you will struggle.
I am travelling Asia again in May for 4 months, and I will be going to at least 1 full moon party at Koh Phangan. The beach is full of fellow travellers and locals. Everyone is drinking on the beach, watching fire shows and much more. Of course you have gotta be careful but dont you anywhere?! I didnt see any trouble last time I were there and I never had any problems at the party or anywhere else in Asia.
I had a quietish night the night before the party and I think I will be doing this again. The party goes on all night and well into the following day. Me n my mate went to the morning party as well, which was up some mountain somewhere . Loads of booze - whiskey buckets, shots everywhere!! You should definetly go!!
Reply to this There used to be a website about world parties. I havent been able to access it for ages now, so maybe it no longer exists. Does anyone know if another?

Reply to this Full moon party is awesome! Rick said it all in a nutshell! Be there a couple of days early... Settle in... and enjoy the alcohol, DJ's and what follows.
Reply to this Hey I am Planning to go there for New Year to... do you have to get a boat from Ko samui to Ko Phangan... does anyone know the time distance and prices etc?
Reply to this As far as I remember, the time it took to get from Ko Samui was a couple of hours. I dont know for sure because I didnt time it. It think it cost around 5 Euros. But that was a few years ago.....
Reply to this I didnt think it took that long to be honest. You do get a boat, think it only 250 baht.
If I remember correctly, it took around an hour - but I were still steaming from the night before and back on the beer on the boat! So I wouldnt take my word on that. As the weather is fantastic and its an open deck boat, its nice to sit on the edge of the boat, with the breeze n chill out with a few beers!
Reply to this We were there in September 2008 and would definitelly recommend the Full Moon Party!! Ironically, we weren't actually going to go, because we'd heard such gong show stories about what goes down ... but then ended up giving it a go anyways. It was honestlly one of the best nights of our entire year of travelling. We had sooo much fun and it was definitelly worth it!!
Our original plan was to stay on Ko Samui and do the boat trip (500 Baht each), but because we were watching our money, we thought it was dumb to spent the money to go there and back if we were just planning to head to Ko Phangnan in a few days anyways. We arrived the afternoon of the party and found a place for 500 Baht. It was up in the mountain above Haad Rin Beach - about a 20 minute walk ... not the best fore thought in terms of a drunk stumble home at 8am ... but it was more important for us to save money than it was to have a great place right on a beach. And even if you can't get a place on Haad Rin Beach, there are many other beaches you can stay at; there are trucks going up and down the island all night.
Just a side note about the boats heading back to Ko Samui ... we'd met many people that night who had to cut the party short because their boat was leaving. I think the last boat heads back at 6am and at that time the party is still going and it seemed rather annoying for them.
Reply to this My dad was there for New Years 2000. They definitely partied like it was 1999. He said it was crazy and a real good time.
