Lars,
I'm not familiar with the Orca project. My guess is outside of volunteering that you'll need a work permit.

Hi Lars,
There are 2 amazing volunteer projects in SA with wildlife: Cheetah Outreach in Stellenbosch (near Cape Town) and Knysna Elephant Park in Knysna (near Plettenberg Bay). The first you do not have to pay and you will be around the cheetahs every working day. They love in captivity and what your job will be is talking to the public about the cheetahs being highly endangered. Knysna Elephant park you do have to pay a little amount but it is absolutely worth it. The elephants are living in a controlled free range envirement in they are rescued from being shot during culling operations. I do not know about the orca project...sorry. Both the other projects I have worked as a volunteer for over a year and I regreded going home deeply.
Getting a job is probably difficult without a working permit but with the soccer coming up next year you might be in luck. Start arranging your papers early as African time is very slow!!!!
