el fuerte to Mexico df

If u had 3 weeks to get to Mexico city, what route would u take. Taking the train into the Copper Canyon tomorrow but from there nothing fixed. We love anything pretty and colonial and enjoying our trip thus far. Any ideas would be appreciated, we are slow travellers, rather go to less places but stay longer. thanks in anticipation
