Why do you travel, what do you look for in a travel destination?

Why do you travel, what do you look for in a travel destination? Is it the people? Sight seeing? Curiousity? Maybe age has something to do with where you travel and what motivates you. At age 57 I believe that I'm more interested in sightseeing and learning new things about the places I want to see. I'm also concerned about safey and security, especially in today's travel environment. I also think I'm partial to island travel. I like to be near the ocean and love watch the sunsets and have a serene walk on the beach.

Of course I'm also partial to the Island of Okinawa and you'll see me write a lot about it, why because I have a history with the place, and I have family there. I lived there for thirteen years and know the island pretty well. I know the island not only for its tourist attractions, but a lot of its history, and being married to an Okinawan a lot of cutoms and traditions.

It was a big deal for me to be accepted into the family and see how the cultured lived from the other side of the fence. So what motivates you to travel? Reply to this

Hello Roger 😊

I like the way it feel to be in the various destinations. They all feel different.

Mostly I like to see what people are doing around the world and maybe hear a bit about why they are doing it.

Curiousity?

Yeah, that plays a big part. I often like to go to places that dont receive many tourists because they are mysterious.

I'm also concerned about safey and security, especially in today's travel environment.

Is it actually more dangerous these days than it used to be, or do we just have more access to information and that makes it seem worse?

Honestly I want experience the way everyone else lives around the world. To me going to another big city is like staying at home. I want to see the way things were done 1000 yrs ago, the architecture, history and the day in the life of the rest of the world.

Each region is unique and rich with its own culture and tradition. No book or TV show could do justice and describe the beauty of the place.

I love to visit new places, stay amongst local people, watch the sunrise & sunset, enjoy the local cuisine, know the history of the place. Each place has its own distinct architecture, customs, traditions and heritage.

Its the experience that helps me grow as a person and look at the world with a new different perspective. Reply to this

I feel like I was destined to travel to certain places even before I was born. I will find my way to these places one way or another. They are part of my personality. Reply to this

I like to travel around China because of its culture and people.
And sometimes just because it is fun. I am not very long in China, but I've follen in love already to this country already.

It makes me feel alive. I am really a student of people, culture and nature. I love to observe how different cultures are different, but we are all still human. I love to feel the power of nature. Reply to this

For me it is a combination of two things:
-new places
-new people

I do like remote places, but I could not stand in a marvelous place alone for more than 1 week. And thus new people are the most important thing I get during my travelling. Reply to this

I love discovering new places, people and cultures. I usually go for somewhere completely different to where I was last. For example, when I was in England I went to India for 9 months. Total culture shock, but I loved it! Reply to this

I love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and I do this by travelling. How do I pick my destinations ... well, there are certain places that i have always wanted to go before I started with the travel bugs but I love just rocking up to places where I imagine not many people go, feeling like an explorer exploring the final frontiers

1. Visiting friends. This is the best way to travel - scout out friends, family or past contacts and they'll show you places and things you'll never get out of the guide book. This is how i've done most of my adventures and journeys.

2. Sex and drugs and rock and roll! Not every destination lends itself to partys and fun, but everyone round the world needs to let their hair down at sometime, and if you can join em in a carnival, a festival, or a night on the local sauce, why not - like Ernesto & Alberto's motorcycle journey round south america.

3. Anywhere but WORK!!!! get me away! Book me a flight anywhere but here!!

4. Its not the destination, nor the getting there that counts - its the people you meet on the way. Who knows what will happen? new friends will be made?

5. Getting away from the shackles of society at home - why are there so many hippiefied Israelis on the road? possibly because of the pressures of home (religious, political, family, national service etc etc) they need to get away. As we all do, to a lesser degree, maybe?

just a few to get you debating... Reply to this

With all of it I did as a kid - it is something I have always wanted to get back to. Now that my children are grown I hope to do more. I went almost 5 years without a trip anywhere and it was a real bummer! Reply to this

I think most people who go travelling are also running away from something; maybe a failed relationship, the death of someone close or a job they don't like. It might even something that hasn't happened yet. I've just returned from a 6-month trip and with most of the travellers I met along the way I had this conversation. Almost all of them after a few monents silence said "um, ...yes." Reply to this

Travelling is about meeting new people and relaxation from the ordinary. It's not about running away from something. It's about being proactive in your life and seeing our world to the fullest and connecting with people from all walks of life.
