Hey guys,
What is the drug of choice for Malaria pills?

I\\\'ve just recently purchased Larium because they were the only ones I could afford but now I\\\'m rethinking my decision. There has been a lot bad rap for Larium, making some depressed, affecting you psychologically. Um, that\\\'s the last thing I need on my plate on such a trip.

Does anybody have advice for me, reassurance? I\\\'ll be hopefully traveling for a year.

Should I just get a different brand once I\\\'m in South America?
How easy is it to get malaria pills once there?
Did you take your pills the WHOLE DURATION of your TRIP througout south America? What did you do if you were there for a year?

Pura Vida,
Claudia

We brought 4 months supply for our year in Latin America and used only a small amount of these as there aren't so many areas where malaria is rife. Remember Chile and Uruguay are completely free of it, (Argentina practically is too) and malaria isn't a problem at altitude so that takes care of most of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia too. Unless you're spending a long time in the Amazon I reckon there is no real need for them at all.

my doctor recommended malarone because they have the less side effects than the others, though they are more expensive and as far as i have heard from other travellers they cannot be gotten in south america (or at least not in ecuador peru or bolivia). you can get other malaria pills in pharmacies south america however.

i took them for a week in south west coast of ecuador, i didnt notice any side effects.

i recommend you talk to a specialist in tropical diseases, they can provide you with a map and info relating to the risk areas. i can tell you that i didnt take any in the jungle in peru but maybe i croak it right after sending this post.. hehe.. so its no harm to speak to a doctor.. but dont spend too much money on it.

i agree with barry that there are not too many areas at all where you are actually at risk.

I think it is best not to use them at all... just take the best preventions not to get bitten in high risk areas... plenty of mosquito repellent and mosquito nets.
I am from Colombia, and only in the deep Pacific Coast you will be at risk. Just make sure you do go to a hospital if you feel any headaches and fever (my dad lives in Mozambique and has had Malaria 3 times)!
