Hi there, I have just come back from living in COlombia for three months before which I traveled up from Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

As to places to go, I would suggest you definitely see the Caribbean coast. Check out Santa Marta and Tayrona and stay in Taganga for a bit - great for cheap good scuba diving. Well, I had some great diving although heard about a less good experience from another, I don't say that to put you off, just keep your bearings when doing potentially dangerous things. I would act no different in the UK though, where I'm from.

Also, check out cartagena - has real nice atmosphere. Keep in mind, Colombia is not all that cheap if your used to backpacking, like me, in cheap areas and expect Colombia being a developing country to be cheap also. Eating and accommodation is only a little more expensive than Peru, Ecuador, although that took me by surprise a little from reading in the Lonely Planet of how cheap it is. But more importantly buses about can cost a bit more than other SA countries.

Other places - Check out Zona Cafetera, between Medillin and Cali. And for that matter check both those cities out, Cali with the colombian dance spirit. I guess you'll see Colombia's capital Bogota, known as the fridge. Be sure to see the cathedral made out of salt mine - stunning - And I am athiest

You could also check out San Augustin, really nice, but keep in mind that you would be moving closer to a FARC area - I had no problems and would go again, but I would probably advise against it to friends for that reason.

As to volunteering, I haven't got any websites for you to check out but happen to know that my friend who I was staying with in Bogota is starting a volunteer organisation and think it might be interested since you want to travel around. Her scheme was sort of on the back of my advise as a traveler. See, I loved my trip and yet would have loved to volunteer. So what she's is doing is sorting out volunteering between many projects focusing on sustainable development - which she has a masters in from Austraila, she's colombian - that means you could teach conversational english help build, swim in the caribbean to count how many times toursits hit the coral, help build sustainable ideas in the amazon - literally anything. I am so excited, I can't wait to go out there myself and live my dream trip while helping leaving a good footprint behind. Let me know if you want more information about this and I'll contact my friend, Laura, or about colombia/peru in general

get my email from my profile - they seem to have a problem with it on this forum

Hey Guys,
Bryn hope you enjoyed your short time over here, the visa only lasting 90 days is a bummer, but hope you get the chance to get back soonest.

Qedr; Im living here and have done for the past 3 years, Expat Brit and loving it, but if you need more up to date information from a world of similar expats, join the Poorbuthappy.com website and engage the Colombia Forums page. Theres a world of useful and useless info on there and also info on expat groups situated all over the country.

Enjoy the trip and the memories!!!
