I am looking for information about Egypt. I am traveling with educational professionals 12/11-22/08 on a guided tour. I want to know what the weather will be like and any thing I should definitely take with me. Any traps/areas etc I should avoid.

Hello Deborah, welcome to the forum.

December is a fantastic month to be in Egypt - the weather is mostly beautiful - not too hot. However, some areas around Luxor (particularly in the West Bank) are a bit warm, and the sun beating against the parched ground makes it like an oven! Ensure you have a hat, sunscreen, and carry plenty of water. However the coastal areas can get rains around that time.

Apart from the usual travel advice (not wandering around at night, only drinking bottled water etc) there is one factor you need to be aware of - and that is baksheesh - this is effectively a payment for people who assist you in some way. The big issue here is that people will force their services on you without you asking - such as pointing out a nice part of a tomb, or showing you something in the street, taking a photo of you - and then expect payment. Avoid accepting assistance from anyone around tourist areas - it sounds harsh - but it makes life easier.

Also, be cautious of the touts that hang around tourist sites (I am particularly thinking of Giza here) as they are incredibly persistent. You may need to be quite forceful with these people to leave you alone. You most common phrase in Egypt will be “lah shukran” or “no, thank you”.

Other things to bring include: torch/flashlight (power does goes off in the tombs sometimes), maybe a small pair of binoculars (if you wish a closer look at some object on top of a temple wall), and extra memory cards for a digital camera – there is so much to photograph!

FYI, my favourite historical sites were as follows (going from south to north): Temple of Ramses II (Abu Simbel), Temple of Karnak (Luxor), Tomb of Nefertari at the Valley of the Queens in Luxor (possibly closed to visitors now), Temple of Hathor (Dendara), Temple of Osiris (Abydos) and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

Thanks for the information. It is the most useful I have gotten. What about internet services? Are there internet cafe's or do most hotels have servcies? I am not planning on taking my laptop but do want to access e-mail. We are staying in Intercontential hotels in Ciaro and Aswan. Rest of the time on cruise boat.

Hello again Deborah

I was there in late 2002, and Internet services were very limited back then, but available. I would imagine they have improved greatly. The Intercontinental hotel in Cairo is sure to have the Internet, and so should Aswan - but neither would be cheap. When I was there the well-known 5 star hotels generally had Internet access, so imagine that they still would.

However, what may have changed is the availability of Internet cafes - these are cheaper, and usually slower. There weren't many around in 2002, but there should be more now. The bigger places such as Cairo, Luxor (due to tourists) and Aswan (again due to tourists) should have them - though the latter two places could be painfully slow. Other places are more doubtful, and I would be surprised if there was any access on the cruise boat - best to check with them.

You will love Egypt - it is one of my favourite countries!
