Hi

I am not familiar with Bermejo itself, but yes you must have a tourist visa in Bolivia. And they are serious about it, so I wouldn't bother trying to sneak in and out at a less frequented point.

I had hoped they would be as relaxed as Chile about it, who only makes you get the visa if flying in, but nope. They will also check you leaving the country – they are picky about dates etc. I saw an American girl have problems at the Puno border check. So best just to get it.

You don't have to get it in advance, just get it at the border (or nearest immigration office if they don't do it there. For example, I crossed from Chile, but couldn't get the visa until I arrived in Uyuni three days later).

Be sure and have your Yellow Fever vaccine certificate handy, or they will charge you an additional 70 bolivianos ($10).

Bolivia is a great place, worth the cost IMHO. Reply to this

We are Americans kind of trying to figure out that same question. Right now the official websites state the visa for us is $100 USD when you apply before arriving or $135 at the border. We are going to try to get our ahead of time to avoid any trouble at the border. Not sure about that specific border crossing, but I think this goes for all of Bolivia. Reply to this
