I need the ranges of prices because I am very bad at barganing ..so i will try :D Thank you very much in advance :) Sir Halberd Hal Post Count: 178 Msg: #2 65 weeks ago, September 24th 2008 | For you - when you bargain just offer about 25% to 35% of the price the vendor asks for and see what happens. You can always raise your offer later. Don't feel bad about offering one quarter of the asking price, the vendor doesn't mind asking you double what he would offer a Malaysian. | Vendors are pretty savvy small businessmen - if you look like you have money they don't mind doubling or tripling the price they ask from you! Dress down, if you look like you have the real authentic stuff on and not some knock off fashionable clothing you are asked more for the item you want to buy! After you get a price from a vendor tell the guy thanks and you want to think about it and then see what the next vendor offers you. You may get a better deal from the first vendor a "walking away price" that may be pretty good. Usually if you ask how much a certain item is from several vendors you may get a price that you can live with. Too many tourists are afraid to offer a low price, some tourists for instance , when asked for 100 ringgits will immediately offer 95 ringgits and think they have a good deal! Offer low and bring up your offer if needed! I haven't been to Malaysia in years, my prices would not be current. I know in Thailand that you can get knock off watches from around $3 to $10 US from street vendors. For electronics first check out the prices for the same item in your country and then armed with that price see what it costs in Malaysia. Some warranties for electronic items may not be recognized in your home country. There are fake MP3 players on the market too! http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/271663.html There are gem scams too. If you don't know much about gems you can get burned! http://wikitravel.org/en/Common_scams Have a nice holiday. It's a good place to barging abut the prices, and get fake things from there. From my experince asi lived there for 5 years, normally they will give you the price double. For example; if the product cost 10 $ then they will say it's 20 $. But sometimes, they will even give you more, depend on your luck :) A)shirts, T-shirts, and shorts: normally will cost 20 -25 RM. (Maybe now they increased because of the petrol goes up, as i heared things goes up in malaysia). B) Pants & jeans: I have not bought a fake one, but it shouldn't be more then 40 - 50 RM. C)watch's: The full Aotumatic one, brand, latest model, will cost you maxiumum 120 RM. You can also get nice watch's for 40 - 50 RM. D) Electronic Thingys: In the downtown in KL , there is a mall called LOYAT PLAZA, it's located in the Bukit Bintang street. I would advice you to go there and check out the prices. I think it have 4 - 5 floors and you can find all the Electronic things there. You can also check the Shopping mall which is opposite Loyat and it called Sungai Wang (You will find everything there). E) Wallets & Hand Bags: For wallets it will cost you from 20 - 25 RM aqnd for the handbags it will cost you from 30 - 35 RM. Note that sometimes, they will not agree to reduce the prices, so just tell them Thank you and walk away, once you start to walk they will call you back. But if they didnt call you back just know that your price is too less. You can do that in 2 shops to make sure of the price. Dont forget to buy me some good thingys, will send you the address later, haha, just kidding. P.S: Please note that all these prices was before I left Malaysia on 2005. So it might increased little bit. I hope this will help you little bit. Happy travelling & Shopping :) [Edited: 21:08 - Ray_Om ] Charlie76 Charles Post Count: 74 Msg: #5 63 weeks ago, October 5th 2008 | Well said Ray. Here's another tip for all; before heading out for your next barganing spree, make sure to dress down. Typically, the more you dress up the more tendency the traders will stick to their higher tag price. Don't forget to add abit of local spice to your barganing like adding the "lah" or "bah" (lower price lah, come on bah). Bah or Lah is a conversational expression used widely - Lah in general or Bah especially in Sabah. Nevertheless, these often signifies affection, reflecting the kind and generous people you’ll meet in Sabah. | Bah, have a fun barganing time! And people there are quite rough. Don't ever try the food/fruits that they sell if they ask u to try. As a malaysian, if u try and not buy from them..they will scold u. Actually, Do u know that in some housing/residential areas in Petaling jaya, there have (PASAR MALAM - in malay language) - meaning night market where u can also get many things like fake branded clothes, handbags and many food. I would recommend SS2 and Sri Petaling or OUG. These places has a big Night market where u can get many things... | deleted_102029 deleted_102029 Post Count: 3 Msg: #7 49 weeks ago, January 16th 2009 | Hi , my suggestion is bring local people like hotel or motel staff you can trust and don't make immediate decision to buy, there is many place & option u can choose, i am agree with mr phyllis suggestion to choose night market "pasar malam" as ideal shopping bargain area. | <snip> [Edited: 18:48 - Mell - Removed URL] Administrator B Travelblog Administration Post Count: 228 Msg: #8 49 weeks ago, January 16th 2009 | 1 account deleted. 1 URL blacklisted. It's a bit difficult for foreigners to master this though, but definitely worth a try =) | Ray: Wow - it's amazing that you can roughly know the prices. I am local and I totally have no idea how much things costs in Chinatown - prolly I had a bad experience like that Phyllis described and has avoided China Town ever since. Phyllis: I heard one of the major night market from Uptown Damansara moved to Mutiara Damansara? Any idea about the location? Magic: Sorry - am not much help. But there's one more place that you can try. AS i am staying in PJ area. I usually like to go to Pasar Malam around PJ. The biggest one will be in SS2, Every monday & thursday. Besides that, OUG (thursday) and also Sri Petaling (can't remember which day.) These PM is big and full of varieities. | As what CKK suggested, all electrical items should get in Low Yat Plaza in KL or even the hypermarket like Tesco or Carrefour. Clothes and jewellery i am not sure the price range as there's many shopping centers in KL offer good bargain during shopping carnival (i think is jun - aug'09) or some festive seasons. There will be big sales everywhere. Charlie76 Charles Post Count: 74 Msg: #12 45 weeks ago, February 10th 2009 | Petaling Street is definitely the place to get "goodies" for a relatively low price - when I say low, I mean LOW. Then again, it also depends on your bargaining skills, too. Be it clothing, jewelery, or even electronic goods, KL in general does offer fairly good up-to-date gadgets with negotiable price tags. | Pinkycloudude Cloudude Post Count: 5 Msg: #13 43 weeks ago, March 1st 2009 | 1- what are the ranges of prices in : | a) T-shirts with brand names (nike , addidas ..so on ..they can be fake ) b)pants and jeans c) mp3 or mp8 player ( ones with player and camera and radio or only an mp3 ) d) cameras ..professional ones I guess ...sony ..so on e) jewelery ...peals , coloured stones and gems ? f)wall picture (made of cloth ) hangings ? g) fake brand watches ? 2- which shops in kuala lumpur do they have cheap prices for those ?
