Where are the best places on Costa Rica to spend New Years? Are there any specific problems with travelling in Costa Rica for New Years? Is accomodation, restaurants, tourist offices, attractions etc generally open at that time of the year? If you have spent New Years in Costa Rica or live there, please post your New Years experieces.

I and some friends are thinking of traveling to Costa Rica over the New Year this year and was wondering if people thought a good place to spend the New Year? Also I would like to stay in a good beach town with a variety of things to do(night life the beach, snorkeling, hiking ). Also if you could suggest a good hotel in the town to stay in that would be great. Thanks Reply to this

Hi Dan,
New Year is not such a big event here in Costa Rica. Don't get me wrong there are praties though! here in maneul Antonio and Quepos, there is a big beach party every year, or the street parity in Quepos, they shut down the main streets and have bands playing and dancing etc, though last year there was a power cut!
another fun beach town in Jaco, if you are lookng for nightlife, that is a good option.

the holiday in CR aren't like other places. I've had more fun at a jewish funeral. Nicaragua, Panama, or Colombia are better.....and much more safer! Reply to this

Also... for places to stay, register with www.couchsurfing.com. I have made some great contacts for while I am in CR and most seem really helpful for places to stay and things to do. Good luck! Reply to this

I've spent New Years in CR twice - once in Jaco, and once in (or near) Mal Pais. Jaco is a bigger town, and we celebrated at a bar downtown called the Beetle Bar. They handed out free champagne before midnight, played some fun music to dance to, and had pool tables available. There was a decent mix of travelers, locals and hookers, but we had fun.

This past year my buddy and I were in Mal Pais and asked around about where the party was supposed to be. Everyone pointed us to an outdoor party. Apparently everyone from Santa Teresa, Montezuma, and Mal Pais goes to this outdoor party. They had a live DJ playing House/Bass, a full bar outside, and fireworks on the beach at midnight. That was a fun time as well.

Those would be my two recommendations if you're on the West side. If you want any more info, shoot me a message and I'll help you out any way I can.

Do think of what level of night life you are looking for... Jaco is BIG and there will be lots of tourists and pretty much the same thing you would find in the states. Gee why go to CR? I would much rather be in a quieter, less touristy town on the beach with local bars and even better, local foods and local language. The locals are EXTREMELY friendly and almost always help out us gringos. Just something to think about... Reply to this
