Passport Renewal

What do you do while your passport is being renewed?

OK, so I'm traveling through Thailand and need to get my passport renewed DURING my stay. It takes two weeks from the 1st appointment at the Bangkok embassy. My question is: What can you do during this time? Can I travel Thailand without my passport in hand? I really don't want to just sit around in Bangkok the whole time. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Donavan 😊

Yes, you can travel around Thailand without your passport. Lots of people do that. For example to get an Indian visa and plane ticket some people hand their passports into a travel agents in Bangkok and then head to one of the islands for a week and then go back to Bangkok to collect the passport.

If you want to hire a moped they may want to hold your passport but even if you do have it to give, I wouldnt anyway. Also, if you have travellers cheques you will need a passport to change them. Otherwise I cant see you having any problems because of having no passport.

it's also a good idea to take some copies of your current passport before you hand it in, just in case of anything - nothing will probably happen but in the unlikely event you got inadvertently caught up in something and had to produce documents, then you have the proof that you do HAVE a passport, it's just being renewed. (together with the docket you'll have as receipt when you hand your passport in). And take copies of the page where your Thai visa was stamped in.

As far as I know, when you enter Thailand you passport is supposed to be valid for 6 months after the date you enter. Looks like the immigration did not check yours. It may be wise to visit one of the Thai immigration offices as soon as you get your new passport to make sure everything is OK with your visa(or visa exemption stamp as it is officially known as).
