Question about finding plane tickets on a tight student budget <$500

I'm a student on a tight budget. A friend is graduating and wants to take a trip sometime in January. We're thinking the Caribbean. ANywhere in the caribbean really. (even central america like, Belize or Costa Rica) Just as long as we can afford it. We're probably going to backpack and most likely going to camp or stay at dirt cheap hostels.
But what I'm really having a hard time with is finding roundtrip plane tickets within my budget. I really can't spend anymore than $500 on the trip as a whole. Is there anyway I can find tickets cheap enough? I've tried looking on kayak.com, and a few other mainstream plane ticket sites to no avail. Most deals are from specific cities.. that would cost me up to $300 to get to in the first place since they are not from the place I reside. Reply to this

Have you considered Guatamala and Honduras? It has been a while since I was in C. America but as far as I remember those countries were amongst the cheapest to travel in.
I am not sure you could get a cheaper flight ticket. What you could try if you have not already is check how much the flights cost during the rainy season. Dont worry about the rain too much. It is not as bad or as much as many expect.
