How much of a risk is it in Asia?

I am posting this in response to the following private message I got so others can also contribute opinions.

hello!
You seem to know a ton about asia. My sister and I are traveling to bangkok, cambodia, up the mekong river then to aigon--I am very worried about dengue fever. I am thinking about canceling the trip (we leave in a few days. The CDC makes it sound like dengue fever is everywhere---what are your experiences?

Hello Jenny :)

I have been to Asia 5 times and never got Dengue fever. I even took my 7 year old child with me twice and neither of us got it.

Dengue fever is a risk but certainly not a reason to cancel your trip. I only ever met one person who got it. She had to spend a few days in hospital but she recovered.

To reduce the chances of getting it use mosquito repellant night and day. The mosquitos which transmit Dengue fever are day biting ones which live inside buildings. A repellant containing DEET is very effective. DEET repellants are not available in all countries so you may need to wait until you get to Asia to buy it. One time when I went to Thailand I brought a repellant without DEET from Germany. It was useless for the mosquitos in Thailand.

Haiiiii Jenny,

Well as Mell said "not a reason to cancel your trip" I got Dangue fever twice !! The first time when i was in Malaysia and I admitted to hospital for 3 days. The 2nd time was few months after the first time ( I think only 3 -4 months) and I was in Laos and I admitted to the hospital there for 3 days.

But let me tell you something, i was living in KL for 5 years and I got it only once (None of my friends go it). So i dont see it as it's every where (Maybe I had a bad luck only, hehe) but at the same time you should take all the necessary things, and espiecally the DEET repallnet. After I get out form the hospital in Laos, i crossed the border to Thailand and slept in BKK and then next day to Cambodia for another 2 weeks ;)

Just keep in mind that dangue fever when it come it will play with your tempreture. sometimes u will feel very very high and sometimes u will feel lie you are fine. So if anything happens like this, dont wait and go to the nearest hospital for blood check.

Forget about dangue now and happy travelling.

What are the hospital conditions like in Laos Ray? I heard they are pretty grim.

Don't panic. Have been living in the region for 12 years...had only 2 or 3 friends who got it...that's out of hundred peoples living in the region.

Not much you can do against it...but certainly not a reason to cancel or change a trip.

Have fun!

My friend got it and she was hospitalized for 3 days then she was fine. I've been to Asia so many times I stopped counting and I never got it. I think your chances of winning the lottery are better than getting dangue fever (maybe not) :-D

Well Mel DONT ASK !! hehe.
The hospital was in Pakse, and they called it the BEST HOSPITAL IN THE SOUTH !!!!!
I cant really remmber if there was a pillow but iam very sure there was no Blanket !!! no A/c !!
My tempreture was so high and they wanted to put some towels with water on my forehead and wash my body to reduce the tempreture, so they opned my bags slowely and took my head bandana and used it as a towels, hehehe.

In that difficult situation they will wake you up twice in the middle of the night ! First one to take an injection and that's normal ! the 2nd time which is UNNORMAL AT ALL (After like 15 -30 minutes, you have already falled a sleep) just to pay the 1USD for the injection ! For 3 days was the same story,, haha .

Also it was very difficult to communicate with them in English because their 2nd language is French.

but honestly speaking I LOVED LAOS ! :)

Yeah, I want to go to Laos too. It is on my ever growing list of want to go tos.

I know somebody who is a doctor. He broke a bone in his hand. No hospitals in Laos, even in the capital had an x-ray machine for him to x-ray his hand.

Well Mel, I think you should go to Laos. So far it's the best place I have visited in SE Asia.
Ask your friend the doctor to open a clinick for him self ,, lool

LOL
Would opening a clinic that the locals cant afford make any difference? Well, maybe to foreigners who can pay a bit more it might. :)

So many countries and only a 100 years to live. The usual frustration when trying to work out when I will go to Laos and the others on my list. I need 10 or me to get to them all.
