i've got 3 questions about being in Australia as a backpacker
15 years ago, July 26th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #43135
Hey, anyone knows where is a great place to sleep cheap in australia? just for backpackers, doesn't have to be a hotel or anything fancy.

And where the most fun & beautifull region is?

and maybe if there is a hint on good/fun jobs there to do...

thank you very much

ah, and something about sunprotection, like i know sunlotion works but maybe some more info because I heard u can get skincancer of being in the hot sun that long and I've got a pretty normal skin for belgians so I think I might get it bad there :P (wich i'm all prepared for, i'm just worried about the skincancerthing)

Hi Jeroen,
There are a ton of hostels in Australia an actually a lot of them are not too bad - many have bars and cafes, some even have pools or hot-tubs. If you are not fond of the "18-people-sleeping-in-a-room" thing, many have private rooms with just a double bed. My one word of advice on hostels - bring shower flip flops and something to put on top of the bed to sleep on (sheet, sleeping bag, liner, etc).

As for jobs, you may have to get a work visa (not sure on the restrictions for part time or temporary jobs). If you head to any of the major cities you should be able to find something. Also, what about working at a hostel wherever you travel? This way the stay would most likely be free (I've had several friends that do this) and it's a great way to meet a lot of cool people.

Sun protection - lather up with lots of sunscreen, re-apply every few hours, and cover up in ways that you can - e.g a hat to shade your face. Honestly, it's the same as anywhere else, it's just that the sun is a bit "stronger' because of your location. You can check with your doctor to see if there is anything stronger that they can provide but i've never heard of anything. Just try to find some shady spots and make sure to re-apply. Even being someone who tans very easily, i did get a bit burnt. As with anywhere sunny, just take precautions... the reason that people may be more prone to skin cancer there is because they are more exposed to the sun than many other places.

Hope this helps!

PS, where in Oz are you headed? If you need suggestions, i also traveled on the cheap there and had some amazing experiences! Reply to this

There are lots of great places to go in Australia! How long do you have? How much do you want to see? I lived in Perth for a year and went on a lot of great trips. I'd say the best places were

-Broome and the Kimberley (north corner of western australia)
-the great ocean road (victoria)
-sydney/the blue mountains (new south whales)
-ayers rock/king's canyon (northern territory)

There are hostels all over the place and lots of backpackers all around Australia so you'll never be lonely. Definitely the most crowded place is the east coast so I suggest heading over to the west coast if you have a chance to see some less crowded areas. There are also lots of jobs in Western Australia because of their huge economic boom.

The reason there's an issue with skin cancer in Australia is really because the hole in the ozone layer is sitting right over Antarctica, so the ozone is a lot thiner in the southern hemisphere. Don't spend too much time in the sun, bring a good, wide-brimmed hat, and wear lots of sunscreen and you'll be good. If you burn easily maybe get some light-weight long-sleeved shirts and pants so you have less skin exposed.

Let me know if you have any more questions! Also, feel free to check out my blog for stories and advice!

There are so many lovely paces to visit in Oz you will be totally spoilt for choice. I travelled down the east coast from Cape Tribulation to Melbourne and had the most amazing time.

Obviously the time of year and weather will affect your decision. Do you want it to be hot? Do you want to be in a big city for Christmas / New Year?
Also, think about cost, it is a lot cheaper to travel either the west or the east or the middle than do everthing. And how long do you have to travel? I spent 3 months down just the east and could have easily spent longer (and i didn't work!)

Places I would recommend not to miss would be Cape Tribulation (dive the barrier reef here - there are less tourists and the reef is less damaged), Fraser Island (go self-drive camping here), Airlie beach (party town and visit the Whitsunday Islands from here), Byron Bay (beautiful beach and chilled out town), Melbourne (beautiful city with lots of shopping, great architecture and busy nightlife), Sydney (Opera House, climb the bridge, lots of cool beaches and great bars).

There are so many great places, just google places you fancy and read up on as many blogs as you can to get an idea of where you fancy. You will also get so many tips from fellow travllers when you are out there too!

Have fun!! Reply to this

Oh yes i have to second (or 3rd) the Cape Tribulation recommendation. Actually all of the places in the above posts are fantastic, from what I've seen. I haven't yet gotten to the West or even the middle, I spent my time on the East Coast (I was in school in Wollongong) so I can't comment on the other areas, but i definitely want to go back and see them myself. Byron bay attracts a mainstream of backpackers that want to sit on the beach and enjoy.

I would also try the YHA Australia website, Backpackers website as well for info Reply to this

Thx this has been a lot of good information and ideas :D if there are any more feel free to tell me, I've googled all these places that you guys typed and many look very amazing and I'm planning to see a lot of them.

My plan is to go for 1 year. Go with a Work Holiday Visa, means I can work there and be on holiday at the same time and I'd like to see everything I can but I know a year won't be enough, definitly not with working mixed up in it.
I'm probably guna go through 1 side, probably the east, for starters because I hear the most great things about it.

Right now I'm alone to go, but nobody I kno feels like I do, mostly because most of my friends are my age (19) and they think they're too young for that kind of travelling :D but I don't wana waste time and see the world as soon as possible because I have heard experienced travelers talk that traveling the world is the most amazing & freeing thing in the world.

Who needs expensive stuff at home if you're happy with everything in a backpack 😊 Reply to this
