i have heard of places in tokyo where you can pay to play with kittens... im very intruiged by the quirkiness of this and definitely wanna check it out when im there in sept.... after doing a bit of googling i found one called calico cat but apparently its on outer west tokyo (in kichijoji?) and a bit of a trek from shinjuku... would it be relatively easy to catch a train to kichijoji? it sounds like a cool neighbourhood (not just for the kitten patting haha)

another kitty patting place i heard of was the greedy cat in akihabara.... anyone heard of it? the site didnt give too much info....

and yeah, if you havent sussed it out i am totally a CAT PERSON!! ha ha

Hey Tiff, Sanae had a bit of a look on some JP websites - the one in Akihabara is called JaLaLa, they've got some pictures on this website, but not many <snip>
Also, they also have bird and rabbit cafes too! WTF is this? I've never even heard of it before! I'm slightly interested but slightly more horrified!

Hello Leah :)

I was a bit hasty with snipping your links. They have some nice pictures of the cat cafes. Sorry! We get a lot of spam here. Here they are.

Do you mean hostess bars? Arent they men only clubs that offer more than drinks?
Or are there also host bars where women can go for the same services?

Oh!
I just read the following in your link. :D

The more recent host clubs are similar establishments where primarily male staff cater to females.

toby aimes from lonely planet works in one (male host catering to women) for a night on the tokyo edition dvd! he asks this gorgeous young japanese woman, basically why she bothers when she's clearly attractive enough to 'go out and find a man' in a pub/club.... her answer is pretty much that she thinks tokyo men are selfish and all they want to talk about is themselves, so by using the host services the women get to feel important and fussed over.for a night and get to talk about anything they like and the men are guaranteed to listen!......... only in japan! im very curious though! leah lets check it out when im there ha ha ha

hehe no problems! i'm completely up for both visiting the host bar (or one of the maid bars for that matter) and writing a full expose about it on travelblog - wikipedia said it can be up to 500 USD for one night though! My god. Although perhaps thats the service with all the trimmings, if you get my drift.... as for the rabbit cafes.... do you think they let you in if you admit to having eaten rabbit before??

i think if you turned up to rabbit cafe wearing a bib, carrying a steak knife and wearing an 'oishii usagi' (tasty rabbit) shirt.... giggling with a crazed look in your eye... they might be slightly suss on you. but otherwise you should be fine i reckon! yeah i saw the host bar $500 figure... but it also said drinks from around $10... so depending on the fees for actually being 'hosted' we might be able to get away with just one drink to keep the costs down ha ha.... just get into a nice big silver shiny bag of goony courage before hand!!

500 USD! I think I will skip it when I go to Japan, especially since travelling in Japan is already expensive.

$10 for drinks is probably what they cost in any bar in Japan?

haha we'll definately check it out Tiff, even if we just stay for 5 minutes and 1 drink, sneak a copy of the 'menu' into our bags and sneak out the bag at least we'll have seen it right?
Mel, the drinks here are about 500 yen each - around 5 bucks (also the drinks are pretty watered down) but you have to pay 3000 yen entry fee to get in anywhere, which makes pub crawls super expensive

I think I will just avoid bars in Japan.

you'll be lucky to get in to the craziest bars unless you are a japanese businessman - they have a heavier door policy than a New York club and the owners don't really want curious Gaijin as you'll put off the real clients.
I spent a few weeks in Tokyo and infiltrated a couple by going earlier in the evening when they aren't busy.
The girls sit and talk to you.
Thats about it, you have a drink, they listen to you and ask polite questions and drink small drinks slowly. They are not even 'clip joints' of the sort found in London's Soho where a request for a drink results in you paying hundreds of pounds for a flat lemonade.
The girls i chatted to were mostly from Taiwan and were student making money for their education. They were pretty timid but i think thats more to do with being scared about talking to a westerner in english.
Me and the guy I went with found it amazingly tedious and boring, so i got them to put the kareoke machine on - and i could then tick 2 'must-dos' off the list at once!
I ended up singing 'Ebony and Ivory' to the taiwanese girl, which made her burst into tears and say it was a beautiful song and how amazing the lyrics were!!
When we left, i dont think we paid any extra money but our drinks but she said how happy she felt after hearing that song. ahhhh.

personal Tokyo recommendations - all night kareoke hotel with 'all you can drink' offers and then stumble out to tskiji fish market at 6 am for the FINEST sushi in the world for breakfast.
Sunday markets and the street food all over is cheap and amazing.

Enjoy - its a fantastic place!

well this string is a bit old rossontheweb and ive since been and come back and you're right it is an amazing city - i can't wait to go back! as for the host clubs it wasn't really the gentlemen clubs we were interested in more the sexy little hosty boys hehe... but thanks for the tips! i can't believe u made someone cry with ur karaoke HAHA.....my friend and i checked out all the host club signage and spied on a few of the boys handing out flyers on the street, and even managed a discreet photo inside one of the venues when the doors were accidentally left open more than the usual 2 seconds...and that was enough to satisfy out curiousity! ;)
