Travelling SE Asia on a tour- what budget is required
15 years ago, July 13th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #41767
Hi there,

Im spending about 3 months in SE Asia of which 40 days is an Intrepid Tour from Bangkok to Chiang Mai via Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos. Would love to do this trip all on my own but being a travel agent the deals we get with Intrpied were to good to pass up.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what daily budget we should be setting while on tour. Our accom and transport are obviously all paid for. Im being told anywhere from $10 to $50 a day but am hoping someone who has done similar can help me out

cheers

Hmm.... is your food included too? you didn't mention that. In any case, SE Asia is pretty cheap to travel around - for instance, a beer on the street in Hanoi will cost you less than 10c - seriously!
It depends how you want to live - you can eat very very cheaply from street stalls or basic street cafes for as little as a $1. A lot of places have westernised restaurants where you'll spend more (but still cheap in comparison to western prices).
Accommodation, when you're not on the tour, also varies. You can pay for basic guesthouses (fan rooms, no hot water) for about $5-10, depending on where you are (thailand is slightly more expensive than the other places), or more if you want air-con and hot water. In Vietnam for instance, we got a hotel room (2 people sharing), pretty much four-star, really nice room, and it was $15 a night.
If you allow $50, that should be fine - some days you'll spend less, some days more, depends on what you're doing. Reply to this

Hi

Just a suggestion.. if you could manage to fit India in the tour .. you could spare about 15- 20 days after your planned tour and enjoy an unplanned vacation in India ( I see that you have a tour of about 40 days and about 90 days of Holiday).. you could cover a part of India like maybe only the north east or only South India.. just a suggestion.. In fact in 20 days you could cover South India very well .. which is a beautiful destination... :-)
