'invitation' required for entry to Benin??

we're looking at going to Benin in a month's time and have just been told that, as well as a visa, passports etc, we may need an invitation to get in?

Can anyone tell me anything about visitors to Benin (we're Australian, if that makes any difference to anything) needing/ not needing an invitation from someone within the country in order to travel there, as well as the visa?

Also, any general advice/ info about Benin would be nice! =)
