We came to Siem Reap from Bangkok intending to spend just 2 or 3 nights to see the temples.

As I write this is our 7th night! What a wonderful place full of wonderful people!

We are staying at The Villa, Siem Reap which is excellently appointed with double rooms from $18 up which are fantastic value. Although not Khmer run, the owners do loads for the local community and only employ local staff.

Bar and restaurant wise Pub Street is the main nightlife area and while lively enough is not too lively (perfect for us 32 yr olds). Indie\'s played everywhere aswell which is a gloriously refreshing change from the boom, boom, boom of Khao San Rd!

Most bars serve 400ml glasses of local beer at $0.75, often 2 for 1 during happy hours!

The Temple and Angkor What? are personal favourites.

The Alley parralel to Pub St has lots of cosy little restaurants which serve delicious food - especially Fish Amok - at excellent value prices. There are also Cambodian BBQ places here serving crocodile and snake for the more adventurous of you.

To explore the temples we bought a 3 day pass for $40 and on the first day hired bikes at $5 each from a place near the old market - they can be had cheaper but these were decent bikes.

On day 2 and 3 we went via Tuk Tuk - to do the main temples you\'ll pay $10-$15 for the day or $20-$25 for outlying ones like Bantay Srei which is around 40km away.

Our driver - Hing Loeu - was absolutely fantastic. While not a tour guide he speaks excellent English and was full of interesting information not just about the temples but Cambodia & Cambodian life in general.

He was very reliable and we hired him for 2 days running to see the temples and have just had him take us to the floating village on Tonle Sap today and also an orphanage in Sras Srang village www.coso-orphanage.com

(Around 50 kids stay here and any help you can give them either via donating money, supplies or simply your time (there are volunteering opportunities) is greatly needed.)

Hing Loeu\'s phone number is <snip>

i just arrived back from siem reap, and we had a guide proposed by our friends previously visited angkor with him
he is an officially licensed english speaking guide, his name is Draith, 28 years old, having his own car (Camry) can drive you around the temples and the countryside as well, he is able to organize you a tailored trip
we'd been there 3 days which can be enought but the place is so nice that we could easily stay for 2 or 3 additional days
people are very friendly, the food is very good and the high class accomodations are also not too expensive compared to the european prices
i suggest to visit the floating villages on the Tonle Sap lake as well, and if i had more time i would go up to the mountains as well, and could visiting some remote temples
the guide's rate is usd 30/day regardless the size of the group and the car transportation is usd 30 as well
to contact him, or for more infos visit his website: <snip>
we were staying at Tara Angkor hotel, which was a very good 4* hotel, i can also recommend it

Yeah, Siem Reap is such a wonderful place with amazing local people. However, i'm really confusing with price bargaining there. The kids are so adorable but they ask you for double or even 3-4 times the settlement price, lol.

I would love to spend a few weeks there for volunteering work, esp. doing something for the kids. Any idea about a suitable organization/group? Thank you.
