| Extra time in Barcelona - take day trips or trip to Basque region? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
L Sage Lindsay Sage Post Count: 3 Msg: #1 82 weeks ago, May 28th 2008 | I will be staying with some friends for about five days in Barcelona and then we will be off to Ibiza. While in BCN, my friends will be working and I have been there before so I wanted to visit other places. Have been to Madrid, Alicante, Valencia. | Is it more worthwhile to take a few small day trips around BCN (Tarragona, Montserrat, Girona) or to take a trip to the Basque region (San Sebastian, Bilboa)? My only fears about the Basque region is the long train/ bus ride - is it worthwhile? Plus I want to see more than pretty beaches and would like to visit some history - will I find it there? Thanks!! It brings you out in an area called Montejuic (I think). Ditto with exploring the Eixample area and further up the hill to the Park Guell: http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/gaudi/park-guell.html Have a good trip! Playa de Concha is San Sebastián's largest and most popular beach. The name ‘Ondarreta’ means "little beach" in Euskera, the language of Pais Vasco (Basque Province). Zurriola is beach lined with hotels and establishments. Although this beach is not as popular for swimming because it is considered less protected, Playa de la Zurriola is still popular for relaxed beach strolling or for soaking in the sun. The impressive building Kursall looks out over this beach. Moneo, a famous Spanish architect, built this well-known edifice. Although, if you haven't been to Barcelona before you'll have plenty of things to check out just in this town. Skylark Peaced Off Post Count: 32 Msg: #8 82 weeks ago, May 30th 2008 | Yep, for five days you'd prolly spend too much time travelling to get all the way up to the Basque region and back. BTW Girona and Figueres can easily be combined into one day trip by train. | One other place I should have mentioned is Tarragona, about an hour south by train: http://www.tarragonaguide.com/ If you are lucky enough to catch a festival day, it's where those human towers are built in competitions.
