Hop the ferry from one of the Eastern port towns in Italy, over to Corfu Greece. Its a great town, nice people, and beautiful beaches.
Make sure you book a room on the ferry, and not a deck pass. This will give you a place to sleep, rather than in some corner you can find in the bow of the ship. Its a little more money for a lot more comfort. The ferry ride is a bit long, so book the overnight trip so you can sleep a bit.

Thanks for the quick reply! Do you suggest a certaing port of departure and specific ferry line? Also how far in advance should I book a cabin? Now? or is it something i can do once we are ready to leave Rome? Thanks so much again. chris

The port town will vary, and the carrier service will most likely run through one of the three large Hellenic Ferry companies. Here is a good website to check out for booking your passage. It is very user friendly, kinda like an expedia.com for ferries.
I would wait till you are in Rome to book your passage, that way you are not locked into a set date and time. Make sure to book it at least a few days ahead of time though.
As far as the cabin, check the actual trip time. The Superfast Ferries are really quick, so it might not even be an issue. I took a regular ferry and it was an overnight deal. This is also another big thing to consider, how fast you want to get there. The speed comes at a significant price.

Hey Chris,

the best way to go to greece is my a ferry, right. But as you said, you're with no car, just you and your son. so why dont you reserve a taxi. <snip>
I used that company also. Its great. Its just so relaxing when you know that a taxi is waiting for you at the port and you wont be searching for some bus full of people etc.

I'm glad that i helped you out. Have a nice trip! :)

Regards, Dennis.
