Help - Cheapest way to fly domestically in Thailand
15 years ago, May 19th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #35805
I will be in Thailand for 3 weeks in June/July. I will be travelling from Bangkok to Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chang Mai among others, but I do not know the dates I will be going to each. I am trying to be flexible as I do not want to feel rushed at any time. Does anyone have experience with buying airline tickets at the counter the day of travel? Will the prices be that much higher?

Also, I have heard of a package you can purchase to go to several destinations in Thailand, but I cannot seem to find it anymore. If this is purchased, do you need to select the dates of travel up front?

Thanks!!! Reply to this

I have purchased plane tickets in Thailand many times and never had any problems. I usually stay in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok and use the same travel agencies, or I am in Pattaya and use the same ones there. Many years in Asia with no problems with my ticket purchases. Young travelers staying in the Khao San Road area sometimes have problems with dodgy travel agents for plane or bus tickets, but not often. I don't use package deals, up to you! Transportation in Thailand is efficient and cheap.

Many travel agents often post prices for various flights within Thailand on their windows or door, it is very competitive! You can compare prices between travel agents and get the best offer. Usually the prices are not far a part. Don't blow off Bangkok, plan on 2 or 3 days in that city and probably a final night before you leave for home. This way you have time to get plane tickets, train tickets and take some tours. A final night in Bangkok will allow you to do some last minute shopping, bar hopping and not have to worry about connecting flights breaking down and you missing your ride home.

I always use Thai air but there are discount airlines that fly within Thailand. Two major airports in Bangkok, many of the discount airlines use Don Muang DMK. Make sure you know which airport your flight leaves or lands at.

You can take an overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai and save paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok. Get the train tickets a couple days early. If you have a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area, low number end, you will be able to use the Skytrain to get around town. The Skytrain also connects with the subway which can take you to the main train station for Chiang Mai. The Skytrain also connects with the Ekamai bus station for rides to many other cities like Pattaya.

Hi,

Go to check Air Asia web site as well as the one from Bangkok Airways. Do avoid Orient Thai...they have very very old aircrafts. Thai airways do have a pass that include few coupons. The only real advantage with it is you can have a direct flight from Phuket to Chiang Mai, it's on Thai web site.

The train to Chiang Mai is indeed a good idea as night train are cheap and confortable.

Hi Brian,

Even i'm planning to Visit Thailand (south) from 19th Jun 😊
Pls follow the below link, hope it may help!

http://www.airasia.com/site/th/en/promotion.jsp?reference=bkk080521

Booking Period : 20 May 2008 - 31 May 2008
Travel Period : 18 Jun 2008 - 30 Sep 2008
Travel Notes : - fares not available during embargo period
- advance booking required

Even i'm thinking of reserving the air tickets by 31 May but m not sure 'bout the dates 😞
like when i'll start from BKK to Phuket, how long i'll be staying in Phuket, When to move to Krabi....etc
But i guess once i reach BKK i'll find my own way.

Hope for the best 😊

if you are planning on flying direct from BKK to Samui, check on availability of first or last flight of the day, typically saving about 2,000 baht each way if you are able to get one of those tickets.

alternatively, fly any discount airline in to surat thani and taxi/ferry/taxi your way to samui from there.

air asia has a lot of promotional fares out now, even 0 baht fares (you have to pay tax etc) so they are always worth checking. Reply to this

There are 3 lowcost airlines in Thailand.

1. Thai air asia - http://www.airasia.com
Always has the promotions all year round like the Ryanair in Europe. Normally, this is the cheapest airline.

2. One two go - http://www.fly12go.com
The price is static. Same price for all routes in Thailand. Free snack and water on board. The extra foods selling on board are also cheaper than other airlines.

3. Nok air - http://www.nokair.com
The most expensive one but it returns you a better service. Their flight attendances are beautiful.
