Is it a terrible idea to travel to Costa Rica in Sept?

A friend and I are planning a trip to Costa Rica in Sept, and I've heard different information concerning the "rainy" season. Should it really be something to be concerned about? Also, I've heard of ATV trips through the rainforest. Is it worth the money for this trip? What else would be a recommendation for rainforest/outdoor adventure? Thanks!

Hey Matt,
Yes Costa Rica is rainy in September! Though nice sunny mornings are normal with LOTS of rain after 2pm. So you can pretty much organise you activities around the rain...having said that nothing can be certain and you could get a couple days of rain...but it is warm, tropical downpours...not cold cutting rain..not so bad!!
Costa Rica is also incredibly lush in the rainy seaon, and many people say it is better for spotting animals in the morning as they are more active than in the summer heatwave.
Also you can get some GREAT bargains on hotels, many hotels are dying for customers, if you are not planning on booking in advance you can get some massive discounts on the day.
ATVing rocks in the rainy season, loads of mud pits to skid in! Some tours offer a low season discount too.
Hope you have fun

Katherine is correct. Probably the worst month of rainy season to go to Costa Rica, unless you are like my Costa Rica wife who enjoys the rain (I don't).

We've just returned from a wonderful 10 days in CR, the beginning of the rainy season. The advice we got was that Sept/Oct were likely to be the worst months to go if you don't like torrential rain, that is! We had rain almost every day and sometimes huge downpours, usually late afternoon to early evening and then a couple of nights, rain all night. Problem with the rainy season is the roads wash out - we discovered that a lot of CR is only crossable by some of these incredibly tortuous, unpaved, and many unleveled roadways so access to parts of the country is limited more and more as you go through this season.
Re: ATV tours...do you really want to be roaring through this pristine country on gas spewing, noisy and potentially damaging vehicles? We hiked, canoed, ziplined, drove a 4 x 4 for greater distances. We could not imagine doing any of this on an ATV. Sorry, can you tell this topic is not my favorite?!
CR is a wonderful place....I would love to go back. Be sure to see as much as you can....Arenal Volcano area, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Rainforests in teh south, etc etc. Good luck with your plans.
