rainbwbrght Leah Morgan Post Count: 2 Msg: #1 84 weeks ago, May 9th 2008 | I signed up for a language school in Playa Tamarindo. And after the fact have realized that I need some immunizations, and after reading Lonely Planet, there's a ton of sex rings....Should I be as scared as these books are making it out to be? | When I first booked this trip, I thought great! A chance to live in Paradise, have some adventure and learn a language. Now I'm totally freaked out... PS- I'll be there all of June if anyone is interested in meeting up with me... Basically dont wander around alone late at night or at any time in areas with a dangerous reputation and if a situation or person seems in any way dodgy keep your distance. To look for somebody to meet up with you could post a thread in the following forum. Looking for travelling companions. Are you staying with a Costa Rica family or ask your spanish teacher the places to go or not to go, better to ask locals. And as Mel said, tke normal precautions...dont wander about after dark on your own. And have fun...you will find paradise! I wouldnt worry the least bit about Tamarindo. It's not a shody place and is in fact loaded with American toursist or its "Americanized" if you will. Sex rings tend to stay away from these areas. But like Katherine said take normal percuations and use common sense. And to put your mind at ease, i doubt that you will have any place to go without a group of students with you. See ya there!! rainbwbrght Leah Morgan Post Count: 2 Msg: #5 83 weeks ago, May 14th 2008 | Wow, thank you all for your inspiring responses(o: It's good to hear all of it. I'm starting to get really excited now! (not so freaked out-it is my first time traveling alone)... | deleted_72779 deleted_72779 Post Count: 5 Msg: #6 83 weeks ago, May 15th 2008 | Buy a wedding ring! I'm traveling for 4 months in Central America more or less by myself and I am also a single female traveller. I bought a cheap plain, silver ring to wear on my left hand. It's something I picked up in France to help ward off unwanted attention. Also, to blend in use a plastic bag from the local grocery store instead of a fancy purse and try to avoid wearing shorts. Capris are a good option. | Hot Foot ... Post Count: 15 Msg: #7 83 weeks ago, May 15th 2008 | I was in Playa Tamarindo a few months ago. Honestly, its basically a resort town with about a 50-50 mix of locals/tourists. | It felt completely safe, people are friendly and its easy to get around. Personally, I hated it and left as soon as I could, it wasn't my thing. But most people love it. I was also a single female. Feel free to message me if you need anymore info. Having travelled internationally on my own for the last 5 years, the first trip is always the scariest but also exhilarating. Having spent lots of time on my own travelling for business domestically, it became no big deal to go to a nice restaurant to do some exploring on my own. Going internationally was just the next step. Act as if you are in NYC or any other large area. Most other cultures have an impression of the typical American tourist - jeans or shorts, sneakers, t-shirt and backpack. If you stay away from that look, people will not automatically assume you are a tourist. Buy nice looking comfy shoes and if you do wear jeans put them together with a blouse or sweater and add a scarf. I don't carry a backback but have a nice black schoolbag type of bag or a large old leather satchel. No fanny packs either! If you go to dinner, put on nice pants or a skirt and sweater as you will get better service. | Number of Users: 7 | Number of Posts: 8 | ||||||||||||||||
