Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

the last few days we spent in rio going an assortment of blocos, these are basically a tradition that started with carnival where each block has a band that plays on the flat bed of a truck and then everyone from the neighborhood (and anyone eles who wants to join in) follow behind and drink a ton of beer and sing along. they were great fun and also very tiring. one of them went on for about 3 hrs cruising down the one of the biggeset streets in rio. we spent today soaking up the atlantic ocean and the sun south [View Full Entry]

We took the 2000 peso (it sounds expensive, but the chilean peso is 575 to the dollar) ride from arica to putre, at the entrance to lauca national park. this park is a unesco world heritage site and it is entirely over 4000m (about 13,000ft.) above sea level. the pictures looked really beautiful, so we had to give it a try. we were glad we did. its cooler than a polar bear{s toenail there. we took a 10,000 peso cab from putre to parinacota, a town of literally 17 people. there we got a room with one of the families and [View Full Entry]

Sitting in a hostel in Rio typing this, marvelling at the extreme weather change between NY and Rio. Since we caught up with you all last we bummed around NY for a few more days, and killed time yesterday (Sat) going to watch Meet The Fockers in a cinema which seemed to have a fairly easy going attitude to admitting homeless bums and total weirdos. Film was pretty amusing but were put off slightly by the strange American going "Oh Boy..." everytime something embarassing was going to happen. Got to JFK airport well in time for our 10:30pm flight thanks to [View Full Entry]

Well, we arrived in Florianopolis finally on Saturday without sleeping in an actual bed since Wednesday night. We '´accidentally´' stayed out all night Thursday night, walked home along the beach at 830 in the morning, red bull still in hand, and packed up our bags to check out of the hotel. We then became true bums, we slept on the beach until it was too hot, then we showered and changed clothes at a little outside shower right along the edge of the busy highway. (and you think we can~t rough it?) We waited quite impatiently for the bus to arrive [View Full Entry]

OK, will definitely check a book soon and get the correct names of the locations. They~re all fairly similar. Had another stellar brekky of coffee, pancakes and eggs with ham and cheese. Drove back for 30 mins and went to the Canaima Bird Caves, incredible high caverns that run for 800m and are filled with large nocturnal birds. No flashes allowed inside, and the stalactites/mites all have names. Camels, organ etc. Fantastic views back to the opening of the caves. Takes about two hours to go all the way through. The tour guides are volunteers and take a lantern with them [View Full Entry]

We are now in Ushuaia after flying yesterday from Comodoro Rivadavia. The flight was much quicker than taking the bus for the 2 day (or more) journey. Flying sure is great, the airline was definately a "no frills" adventure, but we made it in one piece. Ushuaia is very busy at the moment, cruise ships line up here heading to the Antarctic. After over a month of dry and barren pampa, we were thrilled to see green grass and flower gardens. The lupin definately reigns supreme here, and roses are thriving as well!!! The weather yesterday was warm and sunny when [View Full Entry]

Could be Caripe actually but Im losing track of days and locations :-). Travelled by Mini-bus from Camana, winding up away from the coast across more mountain ranges. Motion sickness is doing pretty well, not travelling fast enough to get wooey. The coastal area is spectacular and the roads were lined with pottery item and kilns, all for sale. People are collecting for Carnavale, so youre stopped at each town when going over the primitive speed humps and asked for cash. Or they try to sell plantan or pastry items. We stayed at an organic farm above the town, perfect for [View Full Entry]
