Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

I flew on a small two prop airplane from Puerto Natales, Chile to El Calafate, Argentina. I was the only person on the flight. Too bad they didn´t fly over Torres del Paine like I had hoped they would. I guess if I was a pilot I wouldn´t feel too comfortable flying over an area with treacherous winds and thermal updrafts. We instead flew over the Patagonian steppe. [View Full Entry]

To all our adoring fans, we are still alive, and well too. The reason for the dearth of Travelblog entries over the past few weeks is that we've been busy, very busy in fact. I will begin with the most exciting and interesting article first to keep you interested, and fill in the gaps with the other places we've been to at a later date, for those who insist on 100% coverage. In one line though (current status): We're in New Zealand, with a van. Weather and people nice. Rio de Janeiro I've titled this article "The Marvelous City" because that [View Full Entry]

Go Botofogo.....!

2am start to head for the airport and onto Lan Chile to Caracas .... or Crackaasssss as we have kindly renamed it. Lan Chile was great and the Nuestro Hostel sent the fabulous English speaking Mr Ferrars to meet me at the airport. He was absolute gold, showed me all the safe places to change money etc. Caracas airport is on the coast and you drive through three incredible tunnels to the city which is situated behind the mountain. The houses cascade down incredible slopes, colourful areas of poverty with washing hanging from 40 storey windows. One of the best drives [View Full Entry]

Hey guys, My name is Jason. I’m 23 years old and I just graduated from Amherst College in Music and Political Science. I’ve been in Brasil now for about 4 months. I spent the first two months staying with friends of my parents in Sao Paulo (they lived here for two years back in ’89) learning Portuguese and teaching some English classes on the side. I’ve been in Salvador now for two months, playing music (I play guitar and sing) and interning at a travel agency called DiscoverBrazil. I’d love to meet some of you fellow Americans doing the same (I&rsqu [View Full Entry]

hey all, we have hit the foz - foz do iguacu. we werent going to come here but its actually cheaper coming here than going straight to montevideo. but lucky we did! there are 275 waterfalls here and all would be taken aback at the size and sound it makes. it is beatiful here. only problem is its tourist mania here so you cant really get them to yourself... i like the guarani legend behind the falls so i´ll share it with you - the falls originated when a jealous forest god, enraged when a warrior escaping downriver by canoe with [View Full Entry]

Before showing you some of the photos I took while at Torres del Paine in Chile, I´ve included a couple a last minute shots of the art market in downtown Coyhaiqie. The weather in Parque Nacional Las Torres del Paine was miserabñe the first two days so I don´t have much in the way of photos. I hope you enjoy the ones that did come out somewhat OK. Colca canyon is the 2nd deepest canyon in the world at 3,400m at its deepest(the 1st is cotahuasi canyon which is also in southern peru). its about a 5 hour busride from arequipa. we went to a small pueblo named cabanaconde to begin the trek. our original plan was to go it alone and camp wherever we found a suitable spot. however, once we arrived in the town and sat down for some almuerzo, our waitress told us that it really wasnt{ advisable to hike alone as the trails are not well marked and going with a local guide will actually [View Full Entry]
