Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Idyllic beach in Tayrona Park
One of the small bays betwen Arecifes and El Cabo
After a day of rest from the diving (by the way we passed the exam and all that- good old multiple choice :-) today we went into the Parque Nacional Tayrona- a national park which covers a large chunk of the Caribbean coast east of Taganga. We did most of our dives in the western part of the park but the eastern part is said to have the most beautiful beaches so we took a bus and spent the day there and it truly was the most beautiful place I have seen. That side of the park gets a lot more [View Full Entry]

The first week has been amazing... It´s a thousand times more beautiful than I imagined it would be. I´m in the capital now (Quito), which lies in a valley with 5000m high mountains and volcanoes surrounding it. The city is filled with amazing parks, churches and plazas. It´s so easy to just spend the days wandering this place. The weather is a perpetually spring like climate, always 20c and sunny with some rain. The food is great, and everything is, relatively, very cheap. Fresh fruit from the jungle is amazing and costs only pennies, so for me it´s paradise! Beer [View Full Entry]

JGirl & Dunx looking the part
We had been looking forward to this part of our trip following endless recommendations and backpacker hype. We are pleased to report that BA met and exceeded all our expectations, Its a wicked city and heres why... The city has a distinct European feel to it and walking around the streets, you could almost be in Paris or Barcelona. The architecture is impressive and the streets (in the main) are clean and safe. There are endless wicked bars, restaurants and funky shops and everything is dirt cheap!!! Locals are friendly and fun loving and despite the trecherous 80´s with Mrs Maggie [View Full Entry]

Finally here!

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus
Manaus, the capital of the Amazonas. I am in hot Manaus now, after a long journey. The plane had some technical problem and I had to wait forever in the airport in Sao Paolo. However, the Brasilians were very friendly and talked a lot to me - in Portugese of course. I just smiled and nodded and they seemed pleased. Tomorrow I am leaving on a jungle trip, so when I get back I will have some pretty interesting photos and stories to tell you, I hope. I am staying at a hostel with air-conditioning that I would really not call [View Full Entry]

By 8.30am we were on the bumpy road to the Pantenal - which is a vast wetland and allegedly the best place to spot wildlife in its natural environment. At 230 000 square km it is half the size of France and has few people or towns. We travelled on the back of a cattle truck with our guide and Adam and Eve (our Aussie friends). The road was a dirt track with small wooden bridges taking you over the water. It was very bumpy and Eve spent the majority of the journey feeling sick. We spotted a fair bit of [View Full Entry]

I made my way from Costa Rica to Lima, Peru on wednesday. The flight was quick, like three hours. When I got to Peru I was picked up by a woman in her sixties. She took me to her house, gave me food, and let me take a nap. She was the aunt of one of my mom´s friends. We then took a car and drove around Lima. Its a huge place with lots of things going on. We went to a lookout point where you can see the entire city, the ocean, and the desolate desert that surrounds it. When [View Full Entry]

Sunset at Santa Marta
Sunset at Santa Marta
One of the depest natural harbours in South America, Santa Marta reularly welcomed huge ships, in this case a banana boat.
We are now at the end of our first week in Colombia and so far not a sniff of a guerilla, cocaine or a kidnapping! On the contrary I have found the country to be beautiful and the people really friendly and welcoming (unles you come from the USA when they may be less so although most of them seem to have the broadness of mind not to blame all Americans for the sins of Mr Bush...) Our journey here from Venezuela was a real experience (most journeys in these countries seem to be memorable!). We left Merida as planned on [View Full Entry]
