Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

The first order of business after our usual breakfast at the Marriott was to go to the Brazilian consulate to request our tourist visas. Once again, our hotel’s location proved to be very convenient since the consulate address was within walking distance (in between Retiro and Recoleta, over 9 de Julio Avenue). Once there, we went through security and joined a moderately long line of applicants waiting for their turn to speak with one of the three or four consulate officials behind service windows. When our turn came, we were given the bad news: it would take a minimum of three [View Full Entry]

The view from the top of our hotel.
After a 9 hour flight, we arrived in Caracas at 4pm local time. Heading straight out the doors of the airport to bargain for a Black Ford Explorer into the centre of Caracas. Approximately halfway we had to detour back on the other side of the motorway for a half mile up into the favellas, as the main bridge into town had been completely wiped out by a flood. The traffic battled its way up a very steep and narrow road through the backstreets, with the army trying their best to keep a semblance traffic control. Directing six vehicles up one [View Full Entry]

Very long ride to San Pedro on a steaming bus, didn´t need my sleeping bag this time. Luckily had booked the bus with a stop aswell so we got lunch in a restaurant, much better than the onboard food. Quite quick stamping out of Argentina then 2 hours until we stamped into Chile! They can´t be bothered putting border control at the border, so just put it in the town on San Pedro. We got back on the bus after having every bag checked to be taken 2 blocks to the terminal, doh! The terminal is not what I expected, a [View Full Entry]

Ok, so I am supposedly in the middle of an Urban gang war. I am sure those interested got the details from the news so I am just going to fill you in on how this is affecting me. I have seen no violence. I have seen no burned buses. I have only seen a few more police cars than usual. Most of the violence has been concentrated in the south and the east of the city. Not close to where I live or work. So that is lucky. The most interesting thing of it all is that the violence began [View Full Entry]

Well! Lima surprised us both. We had planned to stay just two days, thinking we would probably hate the place. We booked a hostel and a pick up over the internet and so after a very decent flight, we had a driver with our sign ´Schenk Home Peru´. Oh so civilised! We met a great couple on the flight, Becks and Ben and the four of us made our way to the lovely hostel Home Peru in Miraflores. To be honest, the great hostel (and of course great people we met) made our stay just brilliant. The hostel, was on the [View Full Entry]

Well, since I'm here at my hostel which features free unlimited internet use, I figured I might as well post some pics and a report of Santiago just for larfs. First, my hostel, which is da bomb. It features many free things, such as the aforementioned free internet, as well as free washing machines, free breakfast, a pool table, ping pong table, hundreds of DVDs, and an xbox. I haven't made use of them all, but it's nice to know they are there. Also there are two dogs and a cat. Speaking of dogs, South America is full of stray dogs. [View Full Entry]

Cordoba...a university city. smaller than Buenos Aires, but with an awesome nightlife...yes i should have really given myself a break after those 2 weeks in BA!! I wasn´´t even meant to be in Cordoba. Alex, a friend that i made on the trip convinced me to join him in going there. He was following a girl that he was in love with! having arrived at Tango Hostel after a 14hour bus journey, we find out that she had left 1.5days prior!! Alex´s heart was broken...well not really...he moves on quite quickly when it comes to girls...he´s quite a character...barrel of laughs [View Full Entry]

After moving hostels in Bariloche (bad customer service) and not doing much activity at all we got ready to move on... and just as our bags were all packed and ready to go Max, Bo, Tony and pretty much the rest of them from Ushuaia turned up to meet us so we decided to stay on a little longer and party on a bit.. moving to yet another hostel which turned out to be pretty cool as it had ping pong, an outdoor slide and tree house, comfy beds with DUVETS, equipment to plug in your ipod and everything!! After some great fun over the weekend, Sergio, Joaquin, and I needed to take care of some vacation “business”. We had decided prior to leaving Atlanta that we were going to have enough time during our vacation to visit at least two major sites in Argentina; one of them Buenos Aires, and we were leaning for Iguazú Falls as the second site. Since we did not have any reservations for air travel to get to Iguazú or for lodging once there, finding a travel agency and making reservations was high priority in the agenda for Monday. Joaquin had made up his [View Full Entry]

Mid-terms week is over, mostly A´s I'm proud to anounce! One B, but I guess I can live with that since GRAMMAR has never been the strongest aspect of my spanish... or my english for that matter. I've recently been using my time to explore things a little bit closer to home, with the exception of the "Gaucho Party" of course, and Rosario has held some surprising experiences for me in the past few weeks. To begin with, I had the surprising joy of discovering the arabic community that is ragingly strong here in the city. The arabic community is the [View Full Entry]
