Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

We left Chiclayo on May 5. We're now travelling a bit before flying back home. Our first stop was Cuzco, which use to be the capital of the Inca empire. The town still has many leftovers from this old civilisation and there were plenty of ruins to visit in the region. I haven't got much time to write about it all, so I´ll let you enjoy the photos!!! Unless you were hiding behind a rock for the last 20 years you will have heard of the Nazca lines. For all those of you who were hiding behind a rock the Nazca lines are a set of gigantic geoglyphs in the Nazca desert. The figures are up to 300 meters long and include animals (such as hummingbirds, dogs, spiders and monkeys), geometrical figures (such as trapezoids, arrows) and other like the astronaut. The lines were done by the (surprise) [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki [View Full Entry]

In 1911 an explorer named Hiram Bingham paid 1sol (0.25 euro) to be taken to a sacred place hidden in the jungle. He then discovered Machu Picchu, the lost sacred city of the Incas. And what a fantastic place it is... The "Inca Trail" (the path the Incas took during the Spanish occupation to get there) being over booked, we decided to do an alternative 5 day trek to the sacred place, supposedly following Bingham's steps. For 4 days we walked through mountains (up to 4500m), villages and jungles until climbing up to Machu Picchu on the 5th day. We arrived [View Full Entry]

16 Mayo - Machu Picchu Machu Picchu was incredible. Aquas Calientes was not. I'll tell you what, if you are going to Machu Picchu and you haven't been hiking the Inca Trail for at least three days, don't waste your time in the hot springs at Aquas Calientes. In the opinion of everyone in my group, it was a waste of time and money. I have to come back for the Inca Trail, though. I cannot imagine what sort of experience that is. I have only heard good things about the trek and about alternative treks that take you through the [View Full Entry]

It´s the start of my 4th week - I still can´t believe I´ve only been here for 3 weeks. My Portuguese is improving but I still understand more than I can speak which is a bit frustrating. However, I can get the odd sentence out that makes sense! My teaching week was pretty quiet (apart from a visit from the police and their rifles on Thursday). It was Mother´s Day here on Sunday so all the kids made cards and I translated their soppy messages into English. All the tough boys are just big softies at heart - it was really [View Full Entry]

False equator...
False equator...
...damn Frenchies got it wrong!
Well, another day, another country.... I finally got my stuff from my homestay family and shipped out of Quito. I was really quite happy to go, too. The rain was starting to really bug me, and the whole place had taken on quite a menacing feeling, as quite a large number of people at the hostel got mugged during my stay. While I was there, I did however make a quick visit to "El Centro del Mundo", the line of the equator. Did some weird experiments that shows how your sense of balance gets messed up and you lose strength on [View Full Entry]

Correct equator...
