Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Beth, the latest volunteer left the previous Friday, surviving a month, but having to return home to visit her father in hospital. So I was the last volunteer at the ranch. No new foreigners due for another month or so. However, the latest plan is vet students, from the local vet university. 2 girls were due to arrive the day I left, and I wish them luck. I´m glad as it means that I feel less guilty about leaving the horses with no one to look after them. It still hasn't sunk in that I'm not going back, and that I [View Full Entry]

Hummingbird
Hummingbird
One of the most famous figures. It is also on the Peruvian coins
Unless you were hiding behind a rock for the last 20 years you will have heard of the Nazca lines. For all those of you who were hiding behind a rock the Nazca lines are a set of gigantic geoglyphs in the Nazca desert. The figures are up to 300 meters long and include animals (such as hummingbirds, dogs, spiders and monkeys), geometrical figures (such as trapezoids, arrows) and other like the astronaut. The lines were done by the (surprise) N [View Full Entry]

Went Canopying in the forest which was cool, zip wiring and abseiling, totally cool!!! met up with a 3 americans (2 of who are originally from glasgow) and caught the bus to lake angustora and hired bikes and went off on the mountain biking trail. "The United States seems destined by Providence to plague Latin America with misery in the name of liberty." (Simon Boliva, El Libertador). During my trip through the amazing and remote South West of Bolivia, I looked out of the window of the Toyota 4 wheel drive towards the horizon. I was looking towards the Salar de Uyuni (the worlds largest salt flats). But it looked as if some of the landscape had been rubbed out. Light headed as I was from the altitude I would swear that it looked as if the mountains on the horizon were hanging unsupported in the [View Full Entry]

El bolson is the hippy town of Argentina. We arrived and could not find a hostel in the village and so took a taxi 2 a hostel 4 k out of town, pretty much in the middle of no where!! We loved it here as there were no other backpackers and we had a big fire and an aga to cook on. The hostel was by a river and was really peacefull and beautiful. Me, Nikki, Jenny and Rach had a night in around the fire and our other 4 mates arrived the next day!! The four of us decided to [View Full Entry]

Awaiting Evo
Awaiting Evo
Bolivians await a glimse of their president
The other night while sharing a Cusqueña with Mandy over dinner in Cusco, I began to go on and on about the political affairs of Bolivia. Then, it may have been the elevation, but Mandy convinced me that I should give some kind of a political update on the countries that we visit. I don’t know how well this will work for every country, but after spending six weeks in Bolivia, I have more first hand political experiences and opinions then I ever thought possible. I understand that my political views may differ from some of you who read this, [View Full Entry]

Cheering for the President

We´ve arrived in Pucon in Chile which is a nice little town, not unlike San Martin de los Andes, seems a little bit more upmarket than Argentina and definitely more expensive. There´s an active volcano here which is the main reason we´re here - so we can climb up it for 6 hours then slide down it on our bums for 2... how cool does that sound?!!! However, the weather is not too great, ie cloudy, and so it´s not safe to climb it yet as there will be zero visibility. So I am prepared to wait here till the sun [View Full Entry]

We woke for the sunrise, but it wasn't the sun that we wanted to see, it was what the sun was illuminating. With our backs to the heat, we watched the city awaken. The cold dark stones slowly warmed into a living city. The slabs of rocks evolved into living rooms, bedrooms, an empire. Silence was broken only by the waking birds and the grazing llamas eating their breakfast of grass grown in ancient soil. Were we really here? Were we really a part of this morning's moment in a place so well-known and so well-preserved? Taking photos at times such [View Full Entry]

One of the few realy nice places is the plaza the Murillo, like it a lot better than the markets, where they robbed me
When I was in Uyuni, I 'lost' my wallet while waiting at a bus station....No Big deal, I still had my moneybelt with my creditcard and pasport. I asked my parents to send the bankcard to the dutch embassy, and I thought everything would be OK 2 weeks later. While waiting in La Paz for my bankcard....is still not here.....the worst thing happened. After walking at the local marked I discovered my bag was open...and what was missing, yeah my moneybelt. The hassle to arrange everything is the worst, the good thing I sponsored the bolivian economy a big deal, I [View Full Entry]
