Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Mummy heads at the Museo de la Nacion, Lima, Peru.
Back in Lima for a final dose of diesel exhaust fumes. Spent an enjoyable few hours at the Museo de la Nacion catching up on pre Incan Peruvian history, took in MI3 at a theatre and ate one more massive roasted chicken meal. They have perfected the roasted tender chicken here in Peru... one whole roasted chicken fresh off the spit, one large plate of salad, one massive pile of french fries, and one big bottle of Inca Cola for as little as $8-10 Can. incl a beer and tip. The following morning no one had any enthusiasm for the ruins [View Full Entry]

Cama Total - 1st class bus in Argentina. It even goes a bit more down to a completely horizontal position
The main reason for coming to Mendoza for me was mountain Aconcagua and the park in which it lies. Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia, 6962m. At first I wanted to do just some treks in the park, but than I found out that it's possible to climb it without any special technical skills, just with warm enough equipment and 2 weeks of time. Before coming to Mendoza, I even called to insure that the park is open, since I heard it's the end of the season and it might be closed. But after arriving, I [View Full Entry]

I was not planning to go to Buenos Aires before I left for South America, but a friend of mine, Danielle, begged me to visit a friend of her´s that she had met on her South America adventure just a couple months ago. Her friend, Max, worked in the hostel in Buenos Aires (referred to as BA from here on out) and she was sure we would be great friends. 9:30 am Sat. morning, I arrived exhausted after an all night bus ride from Bahia Blanca. I walked up all the stairs of the Victorian building with my mochilas (backpacks) and [View Full Entry]

Rain is dripping off the fragile points of trees and smearing everything on the sidewalks. walking home i smelled fresh bread everywhere and it made me want to slip into a nice warm jacket of a cafe and drink coffee and fresh hot bread layered in butter. OK folks. This is an upcoming trip we're planning and would love feedback. It will be the first running expedition from the southernmost point in South America (Terra del Fuego, Chile) to the northernmost point in North America (Cape Morris Jesup, Greenland). The idea is that I will fly down to the start in Chile and run all the way up to Greenland. Hopefully I can find trails and backroads the whole way. It would be a super help if anyone out there that has done anything like this or who has info on any of the trails I might consider [View Full Entry]

many geographical hotspots have their own motto. for example, belize's is "you better belize it!" connecticut's is "connecticut:we're full of surprises." the united states is apparently the "land of the free," whoever that's supposed to be referring to. argentina's is "argentina: un pais, en serio!" which translates roughly to "argentina: seriously, we're a country!" in our three weeks in this "country," we have come up with a few more...how should i say this...appropriate mottos. here's one: Argentina: Your Unreliable Friend because here's the thing. eve [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we spent our last night in La Paz with Mauricio´s uncle and his family. The greatest adventure of the evening was the unbelievable taxi ride from the travel agency to his uncle´s house! Okay, let´s summarize by saying that it was like a rollercoaster. The driver skillfully drove the wrong way on a one way street, executed an illegal turn and almost killed several people from what I could see from the backseat. Mauricio and his uncle assure me that this is normal driving in La Paz and throughout Bolivia. The entire taxi ride cost 1 dollar! Yup 1 dollar! [View Full Entry]
