Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Laughing in Lima

South America » Peru » Lima
So...onwards to Peru´s capital city. We stayed pretty close to the Plaza de Armas in the centre of the city, but Lima is a massive place with almost 10 million inhabitants and many varied districts. Wandering round the main square, which includes the presidential palace, it was very reassuring to see a myriad of riot police equipped with shields and tear gas guns, and there was even a tank peering round the corner. Great. At the time, Peru was gearing up for the election run-off between Alan Garcia Perez (former president from 1985-90, his term characterised by hyperinflation, devaluation of t [View Full Entry]

Carly arrives! I´m taking over for a little.... So i arrive in Santiago, and the first thing that hits me is...the smog. Even from the plane you can see giants wisps of white, combing over the wide red hills, but from the ground it is thick and overcast. On our first full day together we decide to tackle the 2 lookouts of the city, San Lucia and San Cristobal. Even from the top of Lucia, an old stone castle and gardens, you can barely see the outline of the Andes towering over the city...but the view is fantastic. Looking up to [View Full Entry]

20 Mayo - Manu Manu was awesome. I felt so at home there. Not scared or out of place at all, rather the contrary. I felt completely at home. I was able to answer some questions about the place and was able to pick some things out that the others thought were interesting…or maybe they were just acting like they were interested. We took a long, dusty (too dusty) bus ride to get there, but it afforded us the opportunity to stop at Tres Cruces, which is a part of the Bosque Nublado (Cloud Forest) and is the high point looking [View Full Entry]

It was an uneasy night for us, so this morning we woke up a bit tired. The thin air made it hard for us to breathe properly and get a good nights rest. We woke up congested, of all things. But after a good buffet breakfast at the hotel and some aspirin, we were good to go. We began our day by visiting the archaeological sites of Saqsaywaman and Qenko, which are about a 15 minute drive from Cusco. Saqsaywaman is the second most important archaeological site in Peru, next to Machu Picchu. Some even say that the stone work is [View Full Entry]

Hello Everybody, I finished the last blog when we were leaving Pucon in Chile after the weather worsened. We took a overnight bus all the way up to Santiago de Chile where we were able to avoid a possible five hour wait by jumping on an earlier bus for Mendoza. This journey was very beautiful, winding up through the mighty Andes, snow-capped mountains and pristine lakes. We came out the other side in Argentina and the city of Mendoza - the wine making capital and more importantly 290 days of sun a year! Getting of the bus we were approached by [View Full Entry]

Easter Island - it's known to Chileans as Isla de Pascua, and to native islanders as Rapa Nui. It was a 5-hour flight straight out over the Pacific from Santiago, and it is supposedly the most remote inhabited place on earth. I was there for 4 nights/5 days, and it really was something special. Rapa Nui isn't just the name of the island, it is also the name of the native islanders' ethnicity, as well as their language. Today, the island is technically part of Chile, so Spanish is the official language, although you will hear both Spanish and Rapa Nui [View Full Entry]

Ok so since Tues, and my short post about the riots a lot has happened. Before I begin recounting a quick update on the riots is due. Count of burning buses I have witnessed with my own eyes: 0 Count of shootings I have witnessed with my own eyes: 0 Count of people I know actually having seen things with their own eyes: 0 The city is calm, expect for the normal hustle and bustle of large cities. Even the fear and hype created by the media has died down. On that note I would suggest the movie V for [View Full Entry]

After another quick breakfast in a considerably busier hotel restaurant, we readied ourselves for a visit to one of the Guaraní villages in the area. All of the students from University of New Mexico occupying most of our hotel were also getting ready for their visit to the Iguazú National Park. As they boarded a large coach (similar to the one that took us to the park the day before), a large truck, similar to an army personnel carrier, arrived at the premises to pick the three of us up. Our “expedition” must have seemed either terrible or much more interesting [View Full Entry]

We have spent the last two days helping get ready for the big event, Paola´s Wedding. It has been great fun to be able to prepare with Mauricio´s family for the big event. We have made flowers, prepared favors, transformed baskets and helped with the food preparations. Mauricio has several great aunts that are just like my grandmother. They are great fun to be around and love to talk about Bolivia. We will have more to report after the wedding but we are very much enjoying our time in Sucre so far. Family has come from all over Bolivia for the [View Full Entry]
