We went from Salto to Montevideo where we stayed a few nights. But we didn't do much sight seeing and took absolutely no photos. This was not because Montevideo was a bad place, in fact we quite liked it, but we had 3 problems. First, Pieter was sick in bed most of the time with the flu. Second, it was raining all the time we were there. Third, it was bloody bloody cold! Moving on to Colonia, the rain stayed with us but Pieter was feeling better and we determined to enjoy this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arriving at the bus terminal we walked to the main drag where the tourist info office gave us a list of hotels without actually recommending one. We went to the Hotel Posada del Rio on the edge of the ... read more

We took a fast ferry ride across the mouth of La Plata river, but it still took about an hour. You can't see Uruguay from Buenos Aires...that's how wide this river is. We arrived in Colonia del Sacramento, got a really nice room in the old colonial part of town and enjoyed a great sunset here. The next day we rented a 4x4 golf cart and cruised this tiny town built by the Spanish colonial government. After enjoying the day in Colonia we caught a bus to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Montevideo was an interesting place...nice upon first glance, but odd things seemed to happen to us. The taxi driver we got from the bus station to the hotel we found was a really nice and helped us understand some things about Uruguay. He told ... read more

I just got back from a day trip to Uruguay, to a small town directly across Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires called Colonia del Sacramento. After yesterday´s excursion flopped, I was hesitant to commit to another, but (a) I had already bought the ticket, and (b) I wanted the passport stamp. Anyhow, I´m glad I went because it was a great little town. I arrived around 12:30. The first stop in the package I booked was a fixed menu lunch in a restaurant in town. The meal was spinach ravioli with bolognese sauce. I swear to gawd their sauce is EXACTLY the same recipe that Lelli´s (one of the all around best pasta restaurants in the world in Auburn Hills, MI) uses. Anyhow, after that I got a city tour. When that was ... read more

Feels like we have been on the Atkins diet for the last few days, with lots of meat, meat and more meat. After 3 nights in Buenos Aires, we made a ferry crossing to Uruguay yesterday to a small historic town called Colonia Del Sacremento in time for a great sunset over the estuary of the Uruguay river. Heading back to Buenos Aires for a Saturday night out (based on what we´ve seen so far, we will probably sleep until 11.00pm then head out for dinner), and then another monster bus ride across Argentina to the Lake District. Must admit to being a little bit jealous of those of you watching the Tour de France in London today, and also the weather we are seeing at Wimbledon today. It is quite cold here, and expected to ... read more

Currently we are in Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. But let´s update you first on our last great days in Buenos Aires, where we are still going to return twice in the coming weeks ! So Buenos Aires, definitely a city to check out ! We walked for hours and hours through several interesting neighbourhoods. Palermo Viejo is an artistic, charming part of the city with lots of trendy galeries, bars and restaurants. It´s also called Palermo Soho and for sure it has a feel of NYC ! Of course a tango-show was part of our program ! (we still need to do the classes...). We met a Mexican guy who had taken his very cute, 82-year old mother to BA for Mothers day. They gave us many good advices for survival ... read more

Katharine and I decided to head to Colonia, a little town in Uruguay for the weekend. We left on a friday evening by the fast ferry/boat called 'Buquebus' which was the most luxurious ferry I have ever sat on. I made us a little picnic basket and we had a nice 1.5 hour ride to Colonia eating blue cheese and pesto salad and sipping wine..... ...We checked into Posada Los Pinos, a little cozy bed and breakfast located in the centre of town. It came with breakfast and would have been perfect if not for the scanty looking toilet and a few bed bugs from the blankets! Katharine had been to Colonia earlier this year and knew the place and became my personal tour guide over the next 2 days. Colonia, a little town of streets ... read more
