Well here we are in sunny Uruguay! Still haven’t had a chance to relax a little because again we’ve been all over the place…we’ll try to run it down as short as we can! )and sorry we tried to minimise the pics but we took too many!!!)
The flight was long but after what felt like forever we made it hip hip hooray! We’ve come at a great time to be in Uruguay with so much to make the most of…Carnaval, the beaches, soccer…its Nuts! Oh and how could I forget finally meetn up with Belle….a new face to our travels!
Within a couple of hours of arriving we headed off into the city to see El Desfile de Carnival where all the groups of the Carnaval parade in the city streets - just a taste of Las Llamadas! From there headed off to eat some Pizza and Empanadas yummmmmm…… One thing that takes a while for your body to get used to is having a massive lunch at 1.00pm and then eating a massive dinner again at 12.00pm, and of course not to forget all endless amounts of biscochos and empanadas you eat in between…not too good on
the belly!!!
We then had a few days of quickly visiting family and friends who we haven’t seen in ages before heading off to Piriapolis for a couple of nights…We caught the bus from Tres Cruces with our cousins (OMG we are so sick of that place and by the time you read the end of this blog you will understand why!!!) it was a quick 1 hr trip only costing us $3…nice nice….and not long before we hit the beach! Watching the sunset on the beach of Piriapolis is amazing…so beautiful and once the sun has set everyone on the beach claps!
On the Sunday the fam went back to Montevideo and Belle and us took a tour through Punta del Este, stopping off at Punta Ballena first. We also bypassed Casapueblo, (which originally was the house of one of the Rugby Players’ who was in the crash of the Andes) and is now a hotel. Punta del Este was nice, but expensive and when you go to a cafÈ and the menu says “Hamburger and Chips” make sure they are in fact French fries and not chips you get out of a packet…speaking from experience…look at
the pics! We visited the famous hand and spent the day drinking a few beers on the beach! Couldn’t ask for more! We then headed off to el Museo Ralli .. beautiful works of art by sth American artists…couldn’t help but take a few pics! Last few stops were by the lighthouse in Punta del Este and right next to it was a church which is known for celebrity weddings (the guide didn’t tell us the name!!!)
Well since we found out the classic Nacional vs Penarol game was happenin on the Monday, we caught the bus back to Tres Cruces in the afternoon and rushed to the stadium….
Yannick’s view on the game:- One of the most amazing soccer games I’ve ever been to. The crowd and the fanatics that you see shouting for their team is just CRAZY! Both sides have their crowd, their chants, their drums, their fireworks, and their fights, but it’s nothing that you see at an A-League game! As a penarol fan the result wasn’t what I expected but still the atmosphere being at the Estadio Centenario (where the first ever World Cup was) was one of the best places I’ve ever
been to in my life! If you’re ever in the area make sure you check out one of the games and make sure you buy the black and yellow jersey!
Rose’s view on the game :- It was nuts…!! unfortunately due to majority favouring Penarol I was made to sit with the inchada de Penarol….awesome crowd though at the beginning there wasn’t a spare moment that they weren’t cheering n jumping, that is until half time came and it was 1-0 (Nacionals way) that their enthusiasm went down and all you could hear was Nacional’s Cheers from the other side of the stadium! Woohoo spewing I wasn’t there with them but hopefully I can convince everyone to shove over to the other side next time!!! Couldn’t (sorry “wasn’t allowed”) to take photos of Nacional as everyone kept telling me I would get bashed by a nearby Penarol fan….I couldn’t even peep a WOOHOO when they scored and I didn’t want to push my luck!!
PS we won 3-0 B%#$@!.
PPS Don’t listen to what Yannick says about buying the yellow and black jersey…it´s the white, blue and red one you need!! jajaja
The next day back on the
bus from Tres Cruces we went and arrived in Piriapolis. Rose n Belle went on the little chairs that take you all the way up to El Cerro de San Antonio where there you have the entire view of Piriapolis….and no we did not fall and yes we had to lift up our feet so not to lose our thongs or let our feet touch the electrical wires!! Jaja
In the Wednesday we did a tour up and through Rocha, stopping off at Cabo Polonio first. OMG what an awesome place…...but a little town with no electricity and running water…hmmm nice for a visit but don’t think we could stay longer than a few days there! To get to the beach we went on a safari truck riding through the sand dunes along the beach, holding on as tight as we could so not to fall off!! CP is known for its’ Sea Lions and walking along the rocks all you can hear are the sea lions…that and the smell of perished ones that have been washed up onto the shore…poor things but geez what a smell!!! We all climbed up the famous lighthouse where we had the entire
view of Cabo Polonio….gorgeous view where all you see is beach, beach and more beach!!
The next day we went for a site tour around Piriapolis. This time we went through Piria Tours who by far was the best as the tour guide explained the history of every site we passed and visited and by the end our brains were frazzled from all the info!! We visited El Parque de las Cascadas, unfortunately due to the rain the waterfall was dry but still a beautiful park. From there we visited El Castillo de Piria (the founder of Piriapolis Piria’s, castle). The castle itself as well as all the European furniture and tiles is original with a majority of the items being brought over from Piria’s Castle in Montevideo.
On the Friday we had to cut our trip short and head back to Montevideo as the next morning we were off to Buenos Aires….wooohooooo!!!
