Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Que tal chicos! So while I’m sure that all of you were watching the Badger game this past Saturday, I was enduring quite a rivalry myself…..between me…..and the deepest canyon in the world, the Colca Canyon. It was quite a tough adventure (and I have lots of blisters and sore muscles to prove it), pero se vale la pena (but it was worth it). Desiree, who is another exchange student from La Catolica, and I left Thursday afternoon from Lima on a 16 hour bus ride to Arequipa. It sounds worse than it was. These are high tech buses with GPS [View Full Entry]

Trek over, 4 days of sobriety over, it was a 16 hour VIP bus to Ica. The journey was great, big leather seat in the posh section, only a handful of seats on the whole of the downstairs section. Had a nice meal and a few films and i arrived in Ica, where i caught a taxi to Huacachina, a little Oasis in the middle of the desert. Matt & Claire were already there as their little trek finished earlier than mine, so i met them at the hotel they had picked. Little cracker in the sand dunes with a pool. [View Full Entry]

Here i come

Early bus to Lima, and it was just a pitstop really. Claire was flying home, and we were heading way north the day after. I'd heard really bad things about Lima, so didn't expect much. What we saw of it, it ws beautiful. Yeah it ws a big city, but full of stunning squares and great old buildings. Granted, you are offered drugs literally every 30 seconds, but after a few minutes its just funny as you know every single person who approaches is trying to sell, so you have a bit of fun at their expense to pass the time. The VIP section of the bus to Mancora was sold out, so we had to make do with 2nd class, which is still luxurious. We arrived in Mancora in the morning, and after haggling with a tuk tuk driver we settled on staying at Kon Tiki Bungalows, a little bit of luxury to end my trip. They are set slightly above the town, and he soon realised his tuk tuk couldn't make the journey, so we had to walk. It was worth the walk tho, great views of the town and the ocean, a stunning restaurant bar, and 3 little bungalows. [View Full Entry]

Aion ostaa Brasiliassa, Rio de Janeirossa, uudet lasit parin viikon kuluttua. Onneksi minulla oli vanha kännykkäni m [View Full Entry]

Ica South America » Peru
Well, after being on buses three out of four nights in a row, i finally arrived in huacachina, peru. Im not really sure if i should call this a city, a town, or a street, but huacachina is basically a one road oasis five minutes from the town of Ica in southwestern peru. After arriving from Arequipa at about 6am, and literally getting dropped off on the side of a freeway, we took the first taxi we found to the hostel. Unfortunately, after pulling up to our first hostel choice, casa de arena, and knocking on the front door, it appeared [View Full Entry]

Amigos, I must be honest. The first blog entry was quite a bit out of date. In fact, I’m starting this second entry before the first is even posted. The main issue was the pictures. Let’s face it; you’re not going to read these twice, and if I post an entry before the pictures are ready, well, then you’ll never see the pictures. And the pictures tell most of the story—to a large extent, literally, as I’ve put a lot into the captions. I figured out Picasa (if you hadn’t signed up with Google, sorry for making you, but at this [View Full Entry]

Salkantay Trek South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
On Monday, upon returning from Arequipa, I decided on doing the Salkantay Trek. After pricing around tour companies (they are twice as expensive when you book online rather than in the Cusco office -- and most offer the exact same tour for the exact same price. Even the established, Lonely-Planet-recommended companies did the exact same trek, often with the same food and everything). I was able to get the student discount, making my trip only slightly more expensive than a two-day trip to Machu Picchu. I spent the rest of the day trying to visit ruins museums included in the Boleto [View Full Entry]
