Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

¡Hola Arequipa! South America » Peru » Arequipa
So, tuesday 9th we got to Arequipa at 5am and found a hostal then went to sleep for 2 hours. If you're ever tempted to get a night bus from Cusco to Arequipa, go via Juliaca - the road between the Cusco and Arequipa is the Worst Road In The World (Guinness book of records page 262). So, we needed to sleep for a couple of hours so did so and then went for breakfast in the main square and had a bit of a look around. As you can see from the pictures, the main square is really beautiful - [View Full Entry]

The Inca Trail!! South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
Day 1 - Getting going A 5.30 pickup took us by minibus with the group to KM82, the point on the railway where the 4-day Inca Trail started for us. We got aquainted with the group: Laura, 21. Cambridge girl, full of energy. Seems to have been everywhere. Dave, late twenties ;) Scotsman with a bit of Irish. Full of knowledge, a chatty world traveler. Author of "Poland under the Comunists". Seems to have been everywhere, literally. Stephanie, 26. Canadian, relaxed and well balanced holidaymaker. Obviously the more adventurous kind. Pete and Sarah, 25 and 26. English and Irish [View Full Entry]

So, as the previous entry should state we arrived in Cusco really early and had an extra day here almost. We checked out a load of hostals and settled on the Marani on Carmen Alto (San Blas area) because it had a bath and a massive room. We could only stay one night but we took advantage of the bath and booked in for another 2 nights when they had free rooms again. It also had cable tv which was nice. Not much else to say for this day, just general admin stuff. Checking out Cusco So on Sarah´s birthday I [View Full Entry]

Ruins, ruins and more ruins Trujillo provided a taste of things to come in Peru with some fascinating Moche and Chimu ruins (these guys were pre-Incan civilisations). We decided to stay at the beach outside of Trujillo called Huanchaco, our first beach in South America. It was a pretty nice place, lots of fish restaurants and surfers. They seem to be doing some work to the beach front at the moment and are putting in extra flood defences - possibly in preparation for El Niño. The fishermen use the same boats made out of reeds that the fishermen on Lake Titicaca [View Full Entry]

Hola from Cusco. As we rest our weary muscles after the Inca Trail it gives me a chance to update you on travels so far. After Puno, we spent a couple of days in Arequipa, a pretty city set in a valley with volcanoes in the distance. There are two things you need to know about Arequipa. It is the home of Juanita, an Inca Mummy found at the top of a nearby mountain when a neighbouring volcano melted the snow, thus revealing the body. She was a teenage girl chosen as a sacrifice in a time of crisis who walked [View Full Entry]

Finally, a llama!!  South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco

The ultimate South American photo. Llama and Machu Picchu
And so to the home of the Incas, and Paddington Bear... My trip to Peru was neither long, nor original. With time short, I basically devised a plan for a short, sharp hit on the jewel in the thorny crown of South American travel, Cusco, and Macchu Picchu. This is probably the most established tourist centre in South America, and dont they know it.. from the touts at Cusco bus station to the ski resort like prices at the Macchu Picchu cafe, you are reminded that you are certainly on the tourist conveyor belt. Leaving Rachael behind in Bolivia (she´d done [View Full Entry]

Yeh I'm starting to get a bit of colour back into my skin now after a week bumming around on various beaches on the Pacific coast in the North of Peru. The surf hasn't been anything worth renting a board for but it's definately been nice to be swimming in waves and salt water again thats for sure! I also re-discovered the joy of reading which is exciting for me, I picked out the smallest book there was in the book exchange back in Huaras(90pages long) which just happened to be a John Stienbeck classic so I finished it in my [View Full Entry]

on the way up to Laguna Churup I passed about 100 donkeys and cows carrying alsorts of things. and how sweet does that little kid have it huh? cheers mum
Well I planned on doing this 3day circut trek up in the mountains behind Huaras, but when I arrived at Laguna Churup at the end of day 1 I liked it so much that I decided to just kick it there for a couple of days and then go back to Huaras. And I had the whole place to myself apart from about 5 other trekkers per day that came up for a look, and a stray dog I called Henry who made sure that not one scrap of my sloppy food went to waste. He was a very hungry and [View Full Entry]

It's cold above La Paz when cycling downhill
Hola from Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca (stop sniggering at the back). I'll keep it short and sweet today but we do have photos. From Potosi we went to La Paz, the highest capital city in the world via Oruro where our truck was broken into (none of our stuff was taken but others in our group were not so lucky). La Paz was a hectic city where all life seemed to be happening on the streets at maximum speed. We did a city tour and learnt that Bolivia has had more revolutions than presidents and saw the bullet [View Full Entry]
