Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

My first full day in Ayacucho so far has consisted of an orientation of the CCS program and a tour of the locations that they serve in town. We went to a boy’s home, a soup kitchen, Santa Elena health clinic, a school, and a prison. The boy’s home is a place were boys from the age of 5-18 live. They are mostly boys whose family can not afford to take care of them. They have a very nice place to live and go to school. It is very clean and they seem really happy. The boys got all excited when [View Full Entry]

After a few hours sleep, we rose to catch an early bus (a short walk from our hostel) up to the ruins. We got up to the entrance at about 7 am. The horizontal Rays of the early morning sun gave a real atmosphere to the forest-covered mountains. The mountains surrounding Aguas Calientes are really steep, and completely covered in cloud forest... they make quite a contrast to the dry rocky mountains surrounding Olly. We opted to take a guided tour of the ruins, so we'd know a bit of the background behind what we were looking at. Entering the sight [View Full Entry]

Our arrival South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Hola amigos! We arrived in Ayacucho at 7 am. We weren´t sure if they were going to let us on the plane because we had exceeded the weight limit by 15kilos/person. Que Lastima! Apparently it said that we could only take 10kilos/person on our ticket, but we didn´t receive our ticket until we got to the ticket counter. Oh well, we had to pay some extra money to get all of our things to Ayacucho. When we arrived at the house the program director was not there. He had to fly to Lima with one of the volunteers because she had [View Full Entry]

Just a lazy day South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Not all days can be perfect. Your travel destination can't always shine. Sooner or later, the bad comes out with the good. But, you can't let it get you down. We started by having our B&B hire a driver for us to Pisac where they have a famed arts and crafts market on Sundays. Once we got there, the driver informed us that the fee only include a 1-hour wait even though we told the B&B that we wanted to stay until the late afternoon. Of course, if we paid more, then we could stay longer ... Anyhow, I guess the [View Full Entry]

Fab at Forty South America » Peru » Loreto » Iquitos
Fab at Forty Before jumping in our dug out canoe and padling up the Amazon river to face our demons at the Shamonic healing camp, Simon had one particular demon of his own to face, the dreaded 40th Birthday. Our trip to the jungle was once again thwarted by flight cancellations and we found ourselves unexpectedly in Lima airport for the day. This presented us with the welcome prospect of western style fast food, so it was McDonalds all round courtesy of Lan Peru. We may have been delayed but at least we got there alive, one of the planes we [View Full Entry]

Well I’m finally in Ayacucho, Peru. It was a long flight with even a longer lay-over in Lima. I arrived Lima around 1130pm on Saturday night and my flight did not leave till 6 in the moring. I met several of the other volunteers in the food court and we wereable to drink lots of coffee, chit-chat and drink more water then thought possible. Ayacucho sits above 9,000 ft and so I impressed apone my new freinds the importants on hydration at altitude, needless to say we were all runing to the bathroom frequently! The good news is no headach! So [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lima at 9:30 and headed to our hostel. Our hostel was not what we expected. We were a little afraid to sleep there. It was in a safe neighborhood, but it was a little rustic (that is being nice) We left as soon as we could to eat and shop the markets. I decided to brave it and get the Cervice (fish and shellfish cooked solely by the juice of a lime) I forgot to mention that I have been risky with my food choices. I have had sangia twice which has fruit. I have had Mojitos with [View Full Entry]

Pizzarias everywhere

Ok, so we´ve been planning this trip for months. In fact maybe longer. It´s been 15 years since the last time my family and I´ve been to Peru, and I´m really not sure quite what to expect. Nick and I have been doing a lot of research, reading up on different things we´d like to do, places we´d like to see. So to finally be getting ready for this trip was almost like a dream. Packing wasn´t as swift as we hoped it would be...but we managed...we think. At least we did better than my parents. They were still packing up [View Full Entry]

We woke up at 5:30 because we were to be shuttled to the bus that would take us to the train that would take us to Machu Picchu. We were excited, but tired. We arrived at Macchu Picchu at around 11:30, along with half the world, it seemed. It was very crowded, so we took a different route to explore the famous Incan ruins. This proved to be a good choice because we were alone for the first half of the exploration. Of course, I took like 200 pictures. It really was amazing to see. It was not the spiritual experience [View Full Entry]
