Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
We woke up at 5:30 because we were to be shuttled to the bus that would take us to the train that would take us to Machu Picchu. We were excited, but tired. We arrived at Macchu Picchu at around 11:30, along with half the world, it seemed. It was very crowded, so we took a different route to explore the famous Incan ruins. This proved to be a good choice because we were alone for the first half of the exploration. Of course, I took like 200 pictures. It really was amazing to see. It was not the spiritual experience [View Full Entry]

Well, the early morning wake-up to beat the rush was well worth it. We hiked in the dark for about an hour to reach the Sun Gate where we had our bird's eye view onto fog. I don't think I've ever woken up this early before to see fog, but yes fog exists at 6AM. Sarcasm aside, it really was worth it because as the sun rose, the fog dissipated and this stone fortress appeared out of nowhere. That's a great way to see Machu Picchu for the first time. It's the reason to do the 4 day trek and not [View Full Entry]

Sun Gate Arrival

06.08.05 Um 06.30 Uhr standen wir auf. Ich fruehstueckte wieder im Bett. Dummerweise schaffte ich es diesmal, die Milch ueber meine Hose zu verschuetten. Also zuerst Hose waschen und dann weiteressen.

Sorry for the delay. I think when I last wrote, I was crawling on the floor to a bathroom that had no water in order to get sick. My experience with the Peruvian healthcare system was, well maybe we should we just call it "special". It was comprised of a morning at school, stretched out on 5 chairs pushed together for my exam. I then wandered around looking for a lab to deliver my "specimen". My first parasite. I was excited. It's like the Red Badge of Courage for those in development work. As my final week of classes drew to [View Full Entry]

Music in Olly South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo
On Friday evening one of my students, 'Jackeline', had arranged a concert at which she sang. I was pretty impressed with the whole set up, she´d obviously put a lot of energy into getting the thing organised... all the equipment, spreading the word, and getting an accompanying band along ('Incas del Arpa' (Incas of the Harp)). There was a nice atmosphere, although Peruvians have this really strange custom of lining the edges of the 'viewing area' as apposed to gathering in the middle! Ollantay is a really good venue for a concert, a stage down in this little village, surrounded on [View Full Entry]

Feliz Compleaños a mi! Today Atticus (friend from California) and I went to the train station; Tracy es infermo (sick). She is feeling altitude sickness. She is sleeping so she feels better for Machu Picchu. The train station is like an American Department of Motor Vehicles. You take a number and wait to be called. We waited for about 20 minutes to speak with an agent only to find out that they were sold out for Friday. YIKES! Ok, this was really hard for me because I am really a planner and looked into buying tickets months ago, but was told [View Full Entry]

Stairway to Hell South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
This was our longest day of hiking - over 10 miles. We started the day with a long climb up that seemed to wake everyone up. After about an hour, we reached the first pass of the day where we took the opportunity for some silly picture taking. After that, we descended on a series of Incan stone steps. And we went down, and down, and down, and down some more. There were a few ups (to a second pass), but it was all down. On one of the uphills, I was able to catch up to the Billy Goat. He's [View Full Entry]

Bang! That's the pressure in my head now that I've had a few moments to unwind after one hell of a grueling day. Today was our shortest, but toughest day. We ascended over 1200 meters to a peak of 4200 meters. For all my American friends, that roughly climbing 4000 feet to an alititude of almost 14000 feet. The air's thin up here folks. Actually, I had fun during the climb. It was mostly Saggy Buns and I at the front with the Scottish Billy Goat. He's a quiet guy, but he seems nice enough. I'm having a bit of a [View Full Entry]

Breathless

Hope I don’t forget anything. I only have a few days left till I depart for Ayacucho Peru. I’m taking an entire suitcase down full of school supplies that I will give to a school in need once I get there. Special thanks to all of my Co-workers who brought in school supplies for me to take down! I will be working at the Santa Elena Health clinic. I’m not sure exactly what my job duties will include but I imagine that it will have a lot to do with well childcare. I’m very much looking forward to this experience; however, [View Full Entry]

Hola Amigos, Tracy and I arrived in Lima at 5:30 this morning only to wait in line at customs and at baggage claim, so of course, we missed our 6am flight to Cusco. Thankfully we had Atticus to translate and get us on a new flight at 9:30 am. We arrived in Cusco within the hour, and the views of the Andes mountains were unbelievable from the plane! Our hostel is very cute. It has a beautiful court yard to sit and have mate(tea made of coca leaves....said to help with altitude sickness) We are feeling very tired from our overnight [View Full Entry]
