Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Hola Amigos! Today we visited the Wari ruins. It was quite amazing to see the tombs, sacrificial tables, and artifacts that were found at this site. As you walk around, you see pieces of terra cotta that were used in the pottery made by the Wari people. I picked up a few pieces hoping to make them into jewelry when I return. The vistas were unbelieveable and it was really nice to get out of the city and get some fresh air. The weather was gorgeous( 70´s). The ruins were filled with interesting trees and tons of cacti. I took so [View Full Entry]

Epilogue South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
The trip back to Cusco was pretty uneventful - just some tired bodies that were too tired to take any more pictures. The ride back was really bumpy and dusty, and I even thought I might lose it, but I held on for everyone's sakes. The only thing to note was after these 2 weeks, for some reason we decided to have dinner at a chinese restaurant. Big mistake for me. Well, not that big. My food just wasn't any good - that's all. So, the next day, I got up early (5AM) to catch a taxi to the airport and [View Full Entry]

Field Trip South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Today as part of Care Corps, we were invited to visit two communities in the highlands. The first one, named Paraccay is a wonderful community. As soon as we got off the van, a woman greeted us all and gave everyone flowers(Amarillis and Bouganvilla). Then the president of the community got on the loud speaker to announce our arrival. Everyone from the comunity came to greet us. We then went into a room, where the leaders brought out a bulletin board to explain the improvements that they have made since Care Corps has adopted them. It was impressive, however I´m told [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Believe it or not, today was my favorite day yet. We took a trip with Care Corps to see more of their influence in action. We loaded into two vans and took off out of the city of Ayacucho into the countryside. First of all, the roads in Ayacucho are not great, to say the least. Often, you are riding on a small, two lane road a foot from the side of a huge cliff. But the scenery is so beautiful, you almost forget to be scared! We drove and drove and drove, and just when i thought the [View Full Entry]

Wow today was a great day! I am feeling much better today. I took yesterday, Thursday the 18th, off from my work sight and slept in. Today we went to several villages up in the Andean Highlands that are part of the CARE Corps. The first town we went to was named Paraccay. CARE help to outline a plan for the town. The plan included health care, income generation, building of latrines (out-houses) and implemented a sense of community belonging. This town has 35 families that live with in it. On the average a family is 3 to 5 people. The [View Full Entry]

Another great day South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Oh my gosh! I wasn´t going to write in my journal today, but I was reading all of your wonderful comments and had to respond! Thank you so much! I am still having a great time in Ayacucho. It´s actually starting to feel like home more and more. We are teaming up with Care Corp and seeing how they work with people living in poverty. They have many programs all over Peru to help bring money into the economy. We hiked up a mountain today through a ¨neighborhood¨to visit local artist. These people make their home their studio. We visited weavers [View Full Entry]

The nursing home South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Today I decided to go to the nursing home to help out another girl named Sue(she´s from England). It was truly wonderful to do massage for the women in the nursing home. Sue and I did hand massages. For some bizarre reason I brought 6 or 7 little bottles of lotion with me to Peru. They are small so I guess I figured I didn´t want to run out so I brouht lots of them. Well it came in handy today. (must have been some higher power telling me to bring so much lotion) The women are so full of life [View Full Entry]

So today, we got up early for our first foray into the jungle. The morning began with a huge rain storm that we waited out before going. After the rain lightened up a bit, we climbed up and up to this small peak where there is an observation tower. I was a little hesitant to climb up this metal death trap while it was raining for fear of a lightning strike, but there seemed to be a lot of concrete between the metal stairs and the earth. Anyhow, once we got to the top of this 150 foot behemoth, we were [View Full Entry]
